Thu Aug 09, 2001 3:03 pm

Im gonna be seeing this aircraft do a few fly-by's at the Abbotsford airshow this weekend. I was wondering how loud this thing is......does it compare to the Concorde? Keep in mind people that I love loud aircraft.....dont think im a sissy  Pissed. Just asking out of curosity.

CYKA, At the Avalon airshow, I thought that the Tornado and the Nimrod were damn loud. I always have thought this from the day I first saw these some 13 years earlier. However the American announcer said "Wait till you see the B1, then you'll hear noise"

I guess this was a "we are better statement" but in all honesty, I didn't think it was anywhere near as loud when I heard it. Mind you, after the Tornado and the Nimrod my hearing may have been impaired  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

the B-1 is incredibly loud during full afterburner takeoffs. i've heard them takeoff out of mcguire and nellis. i was very impressed by the noise both times

Hmmm, interesting. I would never have suspected the Nimrod could be so loud. Are you guys refering to the Paniva Tornado fighters? The loudest a/c I have seen was an F-18 and those afterburner manuvers and low passes were at the limit of my noise tolarance. The YXX site is down right now but I know the Nimrod will be there doing a demo.

The B-1B is very loud IMO. We have them stationed at Dyess AFB, TX, not far from here. When they takeoff with afterburner, hold on to your ears!

B1-B may not be as loud as Concorde but it is a mighty impressive airshow performer. You won't be dissapointed. I was lucky enough at Edwards AFB show to get some pictures of B-52,B-1,and B-2 in formation flight. Hope you enjoy Abbotsford as much.

In all honesty, I was surprised the Nimrod was so load, but the Tornado, I think beats the Hornet for noise. I haven't heard a B1 take off so I have to claim ignorance there.

Im starting to think It was a good thing I didnt pay the extra $10 for runway seating. Being some 50 feet away from a powering up B-1 or Nimrod would not be cool(based on what I gathered from you guys).

B-1B is a good aircraft to have roar past on a cold English morning. It clears away the fog and warms you as you stand along the runway  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

quite loud, but not as loud as a squadron of Phantoms or Tornadoes taking of in formation.

Ohh I loved the B-1, what a great performer. Defiently the noisest there (set off cheap car alarms), but the noise was more of a deep rumble then the "scream" of the fighters. Somehow I thought it would be louder, not that im disapointed.

Back from YXX It was alright.. The Runway seating was not worth it.
The B1B thou.. It was loud alright,.It almost feels as if it beat the sound barrier cuz the sound comes right after the plane passess.. Boy Ive never had that before..
It was great to see it Zooom By.
I think the F16 is the loudest by far.. My ears started to hurt. DUring afterburner take off run..

You've apparently never heard a Tornado... F-16s whisper past compared to those twin RB199s  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Usually an increase in thrust governs how loud an engine is, each of the Lancer's engines are around 30-34,000 lbs. while each of Concorde's are at 38,400 lbs. But Concorde's engines are turbojets, so I guess the B-1b's aren't as loud.

BTW, does anyone think the B-1 would be unstable since their main landing gears have that small wheel base? Does it tip easy in crosswinds and scratch it's wings when landing, is my question?

I was sat at the end of RAF Mildenhall Runway while a B-1B was doing an engine test a couple of years ago...and I've only just got my hearing back. I still believe that the Tornado is louder.

I definately have to say that the B-1B is the loudest aircraft that i've ever heard. At an airshow at YXU a few years back, the pilot put on his brakes and then hit full afterburner, and stood there at the end of the runway for about 10 seconds before taking off. After a bit it wasn't noise anymore but pressurse waves pounding your ears, I loved it. Second has to be the F-14, this year at YXU he did the lowest takeoff i have ever seen... i was standing at the end of the runway and he had to be only like 15 feet over the fence on full afterburners, MUCH louder than a Tornado or even an F-4.... the hornet is quiet compared to these guys.... or maybe it's just my hearing that's going.

Extremely loud. I tell you that at the Edwards Airshow, I was dissapointed in the SR71. Not loud at all. The B1B is the loudest Ive heard right up there with Concorde.

 Big thumbs up

We had a pair of B-1s do flybys at Lakehurst this year... even when they didn't go by in afterburner, I thought they were still pretty loud (check out my Lakehurst videos).

If you want a loud aircraft, then the vulcan would shake your house apart with those 4 bristol Olympus engines! but unfortunatly it no longer flies, what a shame

I was at RAF Mildenhall UK this past Sunday waiting to take an ATA L-1011 charter flight back to BWI when I saw a pair of B-1Bs from Dyess AFB TX takeoff. Their loud GE F101 turbofan engines in afterburner shook the ground.

with the B1's noise rumbling through the skyscrapers of Chicago during the Air & Water show, very awesome. Two flew in formation this year.

B-1B In Flight

Fri Sep 14, 2001 5:31 pm

For those who never saw a B-1B in flight:
In a few days our aviation galleries on
will be back online again.
In respect for the victims of the terrorist attacks in the United States it is closed for now.

We have a short video of a high speed pass of a B-1B on there, taken at RAF Mildenhall Air Fete 2000.
Although it is without sound, you virtually can see the power of this jet.

Because of the recent tragic events, don't be surprised that the USAF doesn't reduce their B-1B & B-52H fleet to have them ready for military action.

almost all of these babies are huge, but what i have noticed especially from the AVALON shows is that it appears to depend on what the A/C is doing. Ie I noticed that the F15 when going verticle from the takeoff was Bloody loud and that the 18 going faster on burner down the runway wasn't, until it turned 90 degree's away and pointed it's tail at us and that was a different storey. All depends on what they are doin.
