NH-90

Tue Sep 18, 2001 12:31 pm

Can someone enlighten me as to the current status? I hear a lot about other helicopter programs, but I know nothing about the NH-90, other then that it has orders down in several countries. Is the NH-90 a better helicopter then other helicopters offered in the replacement contests? Does Sikorsky have any orders at all for it's S-92?
Regards,
Zach

Haven't heard anything about it in over a decade. I think we can assume the project died a silent death together with the navy budgets of the countries building it.

The NH-90 is a well established programme and is far from being dead.
It has been recently ordered for series production with a first batch of more than 200 examples. I can tell you that the Italian Armed Forces (notably the Air Cavalry and the Navy) have a requirement already apporved of more than 200 examples. The total for the 5 Countries (Italy, France, Germany, The Netherlands and Portugal) is more than 700.
There are already 3 flying prototypes and the production has begun so the NH-90 can be considered a succesful story, despite it took decades to realize.

hmm, wonder why the Netherlands are so quiet about it...
No news at all about new choppers for the Navy about to enter production (I know some were ordered to replace the Lynx, but with the dismantlement of our fleet there is little need).

The Netherlands have a requirement for 20 NFH-90, the naval version of the NH-90. After Fokker bankruptcy responsibilities for the production has been transferred to Agusta in Italy.

The Dutch aren't al that quiet about it. Although news about it is few and far between. A few months ago there was something of a riot in the parlement because the NH-90 proved to be way more expensive than it's competitor (Sikorksy something-hawk). It was all over the news papers. Chief among them the "Telegraaf".
