Need Some Usaf Info!

Sun Sep 23, 2001 3:28 am

If one joins the USAF, what can he/she expect? How many years do you have to commit to? How many years do you train and do you choose where you want to be stationed. If not, where are some of the places not on American soil that you could be based at.

Also, no links to anything. I hate it.

Best way to check would be your local recruitment center.
A lot depends probably on the job you enlist for. People trying for flighttraining will for example have to enlist for a longer period than someone enlisting as a cook or security guard.

soldiers can be stationed anywhere in the world. I think that for non-com ranks there is a policy to station them close to their hometown if possible (not sure, think I read it somewhere), officers are always in short supply and will typically get assignments all over the place.

If you do not want that, join the National Guard instead, they stay within their own state unless federalised (usually in times of national crisis like war or major natural disaster) or for shorter duration deployment exercises.

The USAF has permanent bases in the UK, Japan, Diego Garcia (Indian Ocean island hellhole/paradise), Germany and Turkey (maybe elsewhere as well).

Well, I am an American-born Israeli living in Israel so I can't really go to my "nearest recruiting center"

Also, all I want is to pilot a fighter. I would love to be based either in the UK or Germany.

well, your chances of getting what YOU want are pretty slim. if all you want is a fighter pilot slot then your better off getting one with the IAF.

You could get to your nearest recruitment center, but I admit it is a bit more difficult than hopping on the bus to the next larger town  Smile/happy/getting dizzy (an Airbus might do of course).
Good luck, I hope you find what you want.

If you're interested in pursuing a career as an Air Force officer and pilot, you MUST have a four-year college degree. The three primary paths to follow to become an Air Force officer are the Air Force Academy, ROTC and Officer Training School.

To be considered for the Officer Training Program, you must be 18-33 years of age, meet certain physical requirements, be a U.S. citizen and possess above-average grades and athletic ability. Pilot candidates should have their application to the selection board no later than 28-1/2 years of age. You must be a graduate of an accredited college or university and have excellent moral character. It's also important to score well on the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test.

Once you receive your commission as an officer and are accepted as a pilot candidate you'll begin specialised undergraduate pilot training (SUPT). During this year-long training you'll either be placed in a fighter/trainer track or a bomber/tanker/transport track depending on your flying abilities. Upon completion of SUPT you continue your training with your aircraft/weapon system until your're fully qualified. This takes another 12-18 mo.

All initial training is in the US. Your assignment is based on the needs of the Air Force but more than likely it will be in the US. During your 8-10 year commitment (following SUPT) you will probably receive an assignment outside the US (you do have some input to location) but there is no guarantee.
