Rcaf Receives Delivery Of First CH-149 Cormorants

Sat Oct 13, 2001 3:30 am

The Royal Canadian Air Force has received its first two (of 15 ordered) CH-149 Cormorants (aka EH-101 Merlin) which will replace the CH-113 Labrador in the SAR role. The first two Cormorants have been sent to CFB Comox in British Columbia where they will be used by the Air Force’s SAR training programme.

For pictures of the new Cormorants you can visit this RCAF official link.

Finally PM Chretien buys replacements for the CH-113... didn't cancel orders for these CH-149's sometime during the early 90's... that guy seriously won't make it alive out of the next election whenever that is... anyway, cool looking planes but only 2 have arrived so far eh.... we need to retire this CH-113 really quick their dropping from the skies nearly every year...

Hopefully, the Canadian goverment will swallow it's pride and buy some ASW versions too, and a few for troop transport.
Here in the UK, the RN will require some more to add to the 44 ASW versions, and the SABR requirement to replace RN Commando transports, RAF Puma transports and RAF Sea King SAR variants. The requirement is for between 50-100 airframes. The RAF are already getting 22 transport versions.
Hopefully, the greater part of SABR will be filled by the EH-101, with maybe some V-22's for the 'high-end' of the Commando choppers replacement.

The grey one in the above photo looks like it's in a combat-SAR configuration, can anyone shed some light?

The grey one is, I believe, the NH90 Naval Prototype (PT5)

That Chopper is looking great! Too bad we are still using Sea Kings for ASW, thank you Chretien (idiot Big grin).

The biggest crime was that more of this aircraft isn't Canadian made.

The EH-101 is further proof that the Canadian government will do everything in it's power to destroy their own aviation industry.

I agree L-188, the original order for SAR and ASW EH-101's, cancelled 1n 1993, involved substantial offsets for Canadian industry. Maybe if they follow up with ASW and transport versions, but the fact that Canada still has a good industry is no thanks to successive goverments, just like here in the UK.

How can the Canadian gov't destroy it's aviation industry when they don't even have an aviation company that builds helicopters.... and doesn't the Air Force and Air Canada buy and use Canadian made planes from Bombardier and DeHavilland in their fleets. I'm also hearing on the news that the gov't will help any of these companies out if they get in any kind of financial trouble due to the recent attacks on America.

Bell make helicopters in Canada.
Large parts of the original cancelled SAR/ASW EH-101 order would have been made in Canada.

Mh772.

Please read up on the history of Avro Canada and the C.102 and the C-105 programs.

Canada put itself behind the eight ball when it nixed those two. Those cancellations really have held Canadian aviation back for the past 50 years. Only in the past 10 years have you seen some modern designs to come out of the Canadair and DHC barns.

At least as far as I can tell all the EH-101 cancellation did was cost the Canadian taxpayer a lot of money and prevent a lot of jobs from being sited in Canada.

Boeing Vertol, Bell, Pratt&Whitney all have major operations south of the border in Canada.
