IDing Aircrafts I

Tue Oct 16, 2001 2:20 am

I mentioned in an older topic that I'm going to sort my picture archives. I started now, and so I have to get the exact ID of some ('bout 4000) aircrafts (including rego, exact type & Squad.). It would be a great help for me if some of the very knowledged members of this forum could help me out with the questions which I'll certainly have.

I started with the Hercules and it's "brethren", so here's my first problem: What's the difference between the AC-130 versions? (AC-130A, AC-130E, AC-130H, & AC-130U)

The A versions has a round(almost flat) nose that dosnt protrude very far past the cockpt and three-bladed props. Other versions are difficult since the improvemnts where subtle and mainly to do with powerplants with avionics. The best way may be with tail numbers and some online military database.

I'd love it when you could see the tail numbers on every shot...

BTW, I've already let it be with sorting my archives, I'm to lazy to do it...

thanks, anyway.

The A and B version of the C130 were called roman nose and do not have a nasal radar now it is not the same for the AC130
a breif history of gunship

the first one was puff the magic dragon a c47 modified the second was the ac 119 then come the ac13

ac130a is th result of the conversion of 7 jc130a it is armed with two 7.62 minigun , 2 20 mm nine extra C130a were converted latter

the next version id the ac130 (11 new c130e converted) have a differnt weapon load (one or two extra 40 mm bofor gun) they latter received an extra 105 mm canon)
the ac130e were latter put to the h standard (new motor and censor)

during its lifetine the e model have seen its machine gun removed on some model

the final version of ac130h iare fitted with the following weapon 2 M61 20mm vulcan (3000 round) (
1 L60 40mm bofor cannon 256 round (100 shot/minute)
1 M102 105 mm (with 100 round) 6 to 10 round per minute

AC130U the most modern version 13 new c130h converted new electroniqu and tracking device light gun mount the sensor include the AAQ-26 ifr detection, APQ180 stike radar system. as a result the U is capable 2.200 nm without reflueling vs 1300 for the ac130h
a ceiling of 30 000 ft instead of 25 000 for the h
it's weapon are
25 mm GAU-12 Gatling gun (1800 rd/min)
1 L60 40mm Bofors canon (sams as in the h)
1 M105 105 mm cannon

to give you an idea a ac130h cost $46.4 (92 ) compared to 72 for a U model
