C-130 Variant Spotlight

Fri Oct 26, 2001 1:10 pm

Not long ago I saw a TV show on the different versions of the C-130... On one an extremely powerful "spotlight" was mounted. So powerful that a 2x4 waved in the beam ignited immediately. Does anyone have info/pics they could share with me? Thanks

I think that's the AC-130.... the one with the gattling guns.... they use it to light up targets on the ground.....

I think the light is the 'bulb' in this picture

I could be wrong though

Here's more info on the AC-130

Get a copy of the Squadron Signal book on the C-130.

I does have a picture of the light equipted C-130.

From my understanding it was originallly intended to illuminate ground targes for strikes by AC-130's and other ground attack aircraft in Nam.

They built it and then realised that that thing would be one big target with those large lights in the night. Can you imagine the IR signature those lights put out?

Anyway the airforce ended up sticking to shooting flares out of the back of C-123's for illuminating targets at night.

It looked like a normal C-130A except with two huge rectangular "drop tank" looking things, one on each side of the cabin forward of the landing gear fairings.
OBAMA-WORST PRESIDENT EVER....Even SKOORB would be better.

They have had nightvision equipment since Vietnam. The use of flares and floodlights is for a good part psychological. There is just something about night turning into days moments before shells rain down that strikes fear into the heart of people. Very effective.
And it's AC-130s, not C-130A  Smile

This C-130 that had the spotlights mounted on it was called RC-130S 'Bias Hunter' of which two were so modified....560493 and 560497.
