Whats Your Favorite Airshow Performer

Fri Dec 21, 2001 12:48 am

Ok first of all this is not meant to be a "this plane" vs "that plane" topic.

This topic is about what plane is your favorite airshow performer, and why. It can be any plane from a Cesna 172 to a B-2 and any reason. If you have a favorite bomber, transport and fighter lets hear them all.

Mine are:
Fighter: Su-27 Flanker (and the other Su-XX based on it).
Reason: Lovely designed aircraft, fast, highly manuverble (sp?) and have a great engine sound. It is also large enough so that you can get good shots of it during its display.

Bomber: B-1B Lancer
Reason: Even though it is a very large aircraft it look sleek and fast. It is very photogenic both in the air and on the ground.

Transport: G-222
Reason: It puts on one hell of a display!!!

Ok thats mine.

I agree with you on fighters and I would add that I like also Tornado and F-104: never seen something faster at such a low level!!!
Unfortunately I have never seen a bomber in my life but I'd die to see a B-1B or a B-52 (a G with turbojets....LLLOUDY!!)
transports: the G-222 (and hopefully the C-27J) is by far the most manouveravble tactical transport and it won severla prizes at the RIAT.

Ciao

Stefano if you ever get the chance to got to RIAT you should really do it. I know its a long way and quite expenceive but it is really worth it. This year one of the themes are bombers and they are trying to get some Russian bombers over, so hopefully there will be lots of bombers there next summer, along with the 350+ other aircrafts.

Sorry Staffan, but I go for the F-16 but the Gripen is very close behind.
When in doubt, flat out!

If you have the chance to see a flying display of a Hungarian MiG-29, take it. I've seen it at this years RIAT in Cottesmore. Fantastic. The pilot, Major Vari, made the most of the Fulcrum and the show included a lot of flares  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
Other good performer, in my opinion, are the Viggen (only a few years of flying to come), the Gripen, the B-1, the G222, the F-16, the F-18 and the Flanker.

The Hungarian MiG-29 does put on a very nice display. It has won the "As the crow flies" trohpy for the last four years at RIAT. ("As the crow flies" is a trohpy awarded by the FRIAT members).

It was a nice touch with the ejection of flares during a tail-slide this year.

Fighter: Rafale
Bomber: Not yet seen one, I would like to see a B1 or a B2.
Transport: the demonstration of the RNlAF F27 was IMHO the best. Shame they do not do these demonstrations with the F50/F60.

So many to list, so a few standouts for me;
Gone for a few years, but the Vulcan was unforgettable.
The hottest fighter I ever saw was the BAC Lightning.
In the 1980's, SR-71's put on fantastic displays at Mildenhall here in the UK, belching flames from the engines.
Something similar was also part of the RAAF F-111C's displays too.
The RAF Red Arrows are the best display team, but in 1987 the Italian team flying MB339's were awesome, but shortly after I saw them at IAT 87 at Fairford, they had a terrible accident at Ramstein in Germany which curtailed subsequent displays, but they are still great.
The Dutch AF did amazing things with an F-27.
Even after all these years, watching Harriers accelerate from the hover is still amazing.

U.S. Shows

Sat Dec 22, 2001 9:07 pm

The American shows don't unfortunately have European demonstrations. Well, I guess Oshkosh has, but I have never had a chance to go there. My list:

Fighter: F-15E
Bomber: B-1B
Jet group: Blue Angels
Other group: Tora, Tora, Tora!

The air show at the Reno Air Races (at least) used to have a dogfight stunt, which was a great one. F-14's and F/A-18's chasing each others and all that pyro! Close to Tora.

I was lucky enough to witness the great Bob Hoover's display aboard the Aero Commander some years ago. Breathtaking! It is still my alltime favorite.

Shawn Tucker in his RAVEN. Flying in a 90 deg. bank from the Bay Bridge to the Golden Gate Bridge with his nose pointed upward about 45deg. He was only doing about 45kts. into an approx. 20Kt. wind. This was Fleet Week in SFO, 1998, where a Blue Angel went in the opposite direction at about 750kts. Literally pulled the water into the air. Way cool! Go to http://steehouwer.com and scroll down to the Fleet Week pics to see. Also some awesome pic's by this guy.

Sean Tucker never flew the Raven or Turbo Raven. You're thinking of Wayne Handley, who flew those two aircraft. Unfortunately at Salinas a few years ago, he was involved in a crash that totaled the Turbo Raven and injured him pretty badly. However, Wayne made a remarkable recovery and is retired from the airshow industry.

Sean Tucker flies the Oracle Challenger, essentially a one-of-a-kind highly modified Pitts. I'm not sure what his sponsor was in 1998...either 1-800-COLLECT or 10-10-220. The plane back then was painted black and yellow (yellow sponsor name) and today it's all bright red with ORACLE painted in white.

My favorite are the old Warbirds from WWII. ME-109, Spitfire, P-51D, Lancaster, B-17 etc.

Last air show I was at there was 2 Mig-29's doing aerobatics over the crowd. Mighty impressive!!

Frecce Tricolore! The best demo team in the world bar none.
The RNtAF F.27 demo team was also great, but was disbanded when their arcraft was taken out of service (GRRRR, they should have gotten an F.60 to replace it).
Helicopter demo from the German Luftwaffe with a Bo105 was also magnificent. Don't know if they still do it.
I wish I were flying

Actually I like them all, but some performers leave you behind with big eyes and mouth open, again and again.

A C-17 landing, backing up, turning around on the runway using a three-point star turn and taking off again, a B-1B or Tornado in a high speed pass at like 100 feet...
And indeed, never visit a souvenir hangar or the bathroom when those Italians with their G-222 are announced. Maybe someone should tell them, that it is just a little airlifter and not a fighter  Big grin

Actually they are "Heeresflieger", the helicopter guys of the German Army, and yes, they still do great displays with CH-53's, Bo-105 and Hueys.
Usually they perform infiltration/exfiltration simulations and firefighting demonstrations and they do great.

Aaaand they loop their Bo-105's too, in fact they perform real loopings instead of the (also cool looking) backflip of the Blue Eagle's Lynx.

They fly the Tiger F5E and it was just a superb performance with great moves and all..

Best Entrance and single mil aircraft show: USAF F-15 East Coast Demo team (they were even nice enough to let us crawl all over their jets even though this was after 9/11)

Best Mil Team: Red Arrows (just no replacement for that many planes in the sky)

Best Civil Team: Aeroshell Aerobatic Team (AT-6s no replacement for a radial engine)

Best Technical Aerobatics: Tie Patty Wagstaff (Extra 300) and Mike Goulien (CAP 232, 4 spades on the wings imagine the roll rate)

Best Airshow Aerobatics: Sean Tucker (400hp Pitts Special with Rocket Gear, Aerodynamic cowling, clipped wings...)

Best Fly-over: USAF Hertiage Flight (P-51, F-86 and F-15 in formation bueitiful)

My favirote plane though is the T-28, there is just nothing like it, doubt me go fly in one.

As far as best pilot, I would say that it goes to a man that I have never seen fly (beyond video), but just blows me away with the amount of knowledge he has, Clint McHenry.
At worst, you screw up and die.
