Will McGuire AFB See C-17s?

Tue Dec 25, 2001 2:06 am

I was wondering what the possibilities were of McGuire AFB having C-17s based there in the future when the time comes to retire their C-141s? Also, does the 767 tanker have a chance at being based there alongside the KC-10s?

As someone who lives 20 miles away from McGuire, I can tell you that we will be getting C-17s as early as 2004. McGuire is the last base to fly C-141s in active duty and as far as the 767 tanker, if they are going to be implemented in the ANG, I would say they will replace the high time KC-135E's first. I don't know where the NJANG's 135s fall into play there, but I would say it would be highly possible that the NJANG will get the 767 tankers.

McGuire is having their airshow on Memorial Day weekend with the Blue Angels and what I would do is talk to a pilot or a bommer from the 305th AMW about the C-17s and someone from the 108th ARW (NJANG) and ask them about the 767 tankers.

Oh yeah... I think McGuire's C-17s might be Special Ops aircraft.

While it is sad to hear that the C-141s will be leaving us, it will be nice to get C-17s. May I ask where you get your information from?

I'd like to see McGwire get C-17s and the 767s since I live near NAS Willow Grove, PA and we frequently get the KC-10's and C-141's of McGwire here, since the bases are only 30 miles apart on a straight line.

The information about the C-17s coming to McGuire came from a ton of sources. I once read an article from the Burlington County Times regarding the Globemaster III's possibly coming to McGuire and from other sources (US Air Force - The New Century by Bob Archer - has a pair of F-22s on the cover) saying C-17s will be at McGuire.

Quoted from that very book, "...C-17 production could be extended with ten aircraft budgeted in 2003, followed by 15 each during the next three years, and the final five in 2007. These will enable the final frontline C-141Bs with the 305th AMW at McGuire AFB, NJ to be replaced, and will allow additional reserve units to convert to the C-17."

Fourteen more C-17s have been approved for special operations forces and they could also be based at McGuire. McGuire at one time had 32 C-141s, now the number is maybe less than 15. Like I've said before, McGuire WILL get the C-17s.
