India To Buy Israeli Phalcons

Tue Jan 08, 2002 9:54 pm

A deal to purchase Israeli Phalcon AWACS Systems is likely to be signed today when Shimon Peres meets the Indian Defence Minister George Fernandes. George has indicated that the Il76 platform may be used to mount the Israeli system. The Indian Air Force already operates a sizable fleet of Il76 called Gajraj locally.

The move comes even as India is having difficulty buildng an indegenous AWACS system. The original plan was to build an AWACS system indegenously and mount it on a A300/310 platform. A development version was built using modified Hindustan 748 Turboprops. One of the test planes crashed near Chennai, and the programme seems to have died a slow death since then, even as the Air Force was eagerly awaiting this vital piece of equipment.

An AWACS system is regarded as a vital element in India's Nuclear Policy of building a "triad" of delivery systems and their associated c4i systems and Israels assistance will be a great help towards this end.

It remains to be seen how the US reacts to this development. The US had earlier blocked the sale of the same equipment to the PRC.

Since Pakistan is now America's best friend (who wouldn't be for $30 Billion?), it is most likely that the States will block the deal soon, and Boeing will probably end up selling a whole bunch of overpriced E767's to India 4-5 years down the road.  Insane

767's from the US? highly unlikely.

India has always regarded US eqpt with suspicion. After the Packet Transports bought in the 50's, the IAF hasnt used ANY American eqpt (except 737's used for VIP transport).

There are French and Russian eqpt on the market. There are also reports that Israel may pitch in through the "back-door".

We (Israel) always jump at the oppurtunity to sell things to neighbors of Arab countries  Big thumbs up

No, just kidding. I agree with LY744, the US will probably block the deal like the whole deal with the Kfir.

No...but you have a nasty habit of wanting to sell technology you've acquired from the US to countries we'd prefer not have it.

The Phalcon system contains a great deal of US originated (particularly Motorola) technology. Even you must conceed the fact that your country excels in reverse engineering and improving existing systems.

If this system was completely indigenous in idea and design, why did the Pentagon threaten to cut off future technology transfers to Israel?

There is your single example.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

WAY my bad. Clearly my contacts are smogged .

I'm confusing my LY's.

It is one of the great blessings I never had an inkling to become an air traffic controller.

I apologize for the mixup, but stand by my other comments.

From todays ToI (http://www.timesofindia.com):
The US has Okayed the sale of the system, but has asked Israel and India to go easy with the public pronounceents on the topic.

Apparently, the US is *uneasy* with Russia, Israel and India *ganging up* (int their eyes) after terrorist attacks on these 3 countries.

AFAIK, the platform for the Phalcon system was to be the IL76 due to commonality with other transport aircraft in the IAF.

Personally, I'm surprised India didn't object to Israel trying to sell the same system to China in 1999. Uncle Sam knows India unlike China will never target the US so I don't see what the objection was in the first place.

Israel actually has a very large indigenous avionics industry. They do not "reverse engineer" on the scale of the Chinese and Pakistanis and the US technology comes via export licences so somebody somewhere is making a profit on it.

The JPost article is simply about American anger at Israel for wanting to sell the plane to China, particularly American legislators friendly with Israel. It says nothing about American technology in the Phalcon of what I believe is a small amount.

Anyway, America made very clear to Israel that the Phalcon would not be sold to China and guess what.... the Phalcon was not sold to China.

India should be much less of an issue as US interests in India are as strong or stronger than they are with Pakistan. Pakistan is not a special friend of the US just a convenient ally to help beat up al Qaida.
