Best Fighter Pilot Competition

Fri Mar 08, 2002 6:05 pm

Hey all,

What is the name of the Competition held in the U.S. (Florida I think) where fighter pilots from several countries compete to see who is the best?

Does it have "William Tell" in the name? I think I remember that, not sure though.

Maybe, I'm not sure.

I might have gotten them mixed up.

I know there's a fighter competion where they send up a drone and they are timed on how long it takes them to engage it and destroy it. I think there's other "events" in the competition as well.

It must be the 'FLIGHT COMMANDER OF THE YEAR' competition. The winner for this year is an italian pilot, Maj. Gianpaolo Goattin.
Here is the news:

- Stato Maggiore Aeronautica - Ufficio Stampa of 23/02/02

Maj. Gianpaolo Goattin, of Verona, 34, from 32nd Wing (Amendola, Italy) was presented the prize Monday, Feb. 1 at Luke AFB (Arizona).
Goattin scored this brilliant performance while serving as F-16 flight instructor at 63rd FS of 56th FW at Luke AFB.
He 's been flying at Luke as exchange pilot since 2000 together with colleagues from many nations such as Germany, Japan, Belgium, U.K., Turkey and shortly Portugal.
Such an high-value recognition abroad by an USAF unit highlights Italian Air Force pilots' skill and proficiency.
Not only did he score the 2001 top prize, but just after three months since he arrived he was named "best flight instructor" of the period; Luke's base newspaper named Goattin "Thunderbolt Instructor Pilot of the Week". He was then named "Fighter Pilot of the Month" at 63rd FS.
In may 2001, the first time for an Italian pilot, he served as Flight Commander ; then early 2002 he was awarded the "Flight Commander of the year 2001".
In the same period of time, Goattin scored the best performance in LAT delivery (Low Angle Toss Attack), obtaining the "LAT Top Gun" prize. Maj. Goattin is married, with a five-year-old child and is due to rejoin his Italian unit, 101st FS of 32nd FW at Amendola, late April.

Great job guy!  Big thumbs up

william tell was at Tyndall AFB in NW Florida though it is not held anymore (though it might come back in a scaled back form sometime) There were many compitions for the fighters and also for weapons controllors in the AWACS and on the ground. The E-9s would fly and the telemetry pods on the planes record shots for the mass debriefs (I've seen this and worked these thigns BTW)

Nellis AFB has several compitions at Red Flag all the time to include bombers, pilots,, weapons directors, etc

Luke has a bomb dropping compition over the AJO range (now Goldwater range) in Southwest Arizona that is what you above post references.
