Rmaf Orders New Aircraft/helicopter

Sat Mar 16, 2002 1:00 pm

The Malaysian government has announced the initial order of 10 Mi-17 Hip helicopter to replace the fleet of some 35 S-61A Sea King. An order for 16-24 Sukhoi
Su-30MKM Flanker is expected shortly. The Su-30MKM for Malaysia will feature a more powerful engines, thrust vectoring nozels, canard foreplane, and a redesigned cockpit featuring LCDs.
With the orders for Su-30s expected does anyone have a clue as to what would be the fate for RMAFs F/A-18D ? The only production model of the Hornet is the 'E' and 'F' model and so could it mean that RMAF will order the Super Hornet's and trade in the 'D' models or sell off the 'D' models altogether and concentrate on the Su-30MKM and MiG-29N?

Personally I found the earlier solution of Hornets + Fulcrums very weird. It seems to have been purely political without military merit.
Malaysia seems to be moving towards a full Russian equipped military (whether that's a smart move militarilly remains to be seen). Buying Super Hornets does not fit in that, as the support equipment, weapons and training are completely different.
Buying Soviet equipment is more logical.

The surprising aspect of the Malaysian arms deal for the last 10 years has been the purchase of the Russian aircraft. Malaysian arm forces are oriented towards western equipment and thus make it surprising when the government orderd the MiG-29. I was expecting the Hornet deal actually.
Introducing Russian equipment actually adds problems.
RMAF personnel are not used to Russian equipment as Russian aircrafts are designed with a very different philosophy in mind compare to what Malaysia is used to.
I think RMAF ought to trade in the F/A-18D for a full size squadron of F/A-18E/F and dispose the MiG-29Ns and replace them with either the Su-30 or the Su-35.
The MiG-29s have been dissapointing to RMAF as it couldn't perform the long range task of flying over South China sea. Anyway, MiG-29s aren't design for that and RMAF incorrectly used the aircraft for a task more suited for the Flanker family.
