AFP TV Show

Sun Apr 07, 2002 8:44 am

I'd like to know what everybody thinks of the new CBS show "AFP American Fighter Pilot". I missed the first episode but managed to see most of last night"s show. I thought it did a good job of describing what jet fighter training is all about and the air to air action was great. I can't wait to see next weeks installment . The ending Friday was a cliffhanger. F-15 running out of runway and no brakes! Anybody care to predict how the student pilot will handle that one?

well I won't spoil it for you but true enough I was at the 95th fighter squadron at Tyndall for most of the filming of this show. I was on casual status as a second lieutenant at the 95th waiting for my ABM training at the 325 TRS on the other side of the base. The show was filmed there from roughly the fall of 99 until the spring of 2000. Oddly enough one of my jobs was setting up the computers and stuff in the briefing rooms used at the 95th and in that show. Most of those folks are not at the 95th and have moved on now, though the CC is still there and getting ready to go.

Funny enough the director who basically lived with us at the Squadron asked in the beggining for one of the 'bad' or worst students who might fail and one of the better 'pilots' and a public interest story as well. SO it is not scripted but was planned to some extent.
and yes the Hooters girl parties are real, we still have them here at Tinker AFB as well  Smile and 'Mr. Bones' the squadron mascot does sit in a coffin at the Bar in the 95th.

I have caught parts of each episode. Having been at that base for a while (in the ATC facility), I at least have a fair appreciation of that training process. I think the show is well produced, but it seems geared more toward the MTV crowd. Seems like they just took the "Real World" model and applied it F-15 training.

Personally, I would have rather seen them profile the F-16 training. Most of the Falcon drivers I have known are much more personable. Plus, the could have added some bombing runs to the show.

I'm going to have to agree with Hamfist on this one. It's basically a post 9/11 version of the real world capitalizing on the current nationalism fad without actually preempting WWF or MTV. I give it another year or so and once the public has again forgotten that freedom isn't free the networks will go back to public millionaire marriages, celebrity court cases and survivor.

I have caught both episodes and I take it for what it is worth, Friday night television. It is not to in-depth and is MTV like, but it does keep one's interest. It is nice to get a glimpse of what the life is like, as I want to follow in their footsteps. Funny though how Hollywood portrays all of its fighter pilots as swinging bachelors ready to rock and roll. We have one married guy with 2 kids, one expectant father and a Back Street boy with blown dried hair. As for the "Do or Die" situation that Giggy is in, I really don't see it that way. Full blower my friend and lets go around. The jet is mechanically able to fly, and it seems that the only problem is that the brakes are not working. Get it back up in the air, assess the situation and get it back on the ground.

Cancel it? Thats interesting, I would have thought it would be more popular than that. Does anyone know how many episodes there are supposed to be? Also, what is this talk of Hooter parties?

"Also, what is this talk of Hooter parties? "

As I said in my above post (I was there, and) Hooters Parties are/were fairly common. We have them here at Tinker as well. The girls from Hooters are paid to deliver large vats of Chicken Wings and they stay while everybody eats and drinks beer and parties. Every flying squadron has it's own bar. Their were females in the Sqd at the time that went as well, it is just one of those things that they did and still do. Usually we would go out and get pics of the girls on the wings of som airplanes back in the maintainers dock behind the squadron. Also as I stated above this was filmed long before 9-11, from the fall of 99 to the spring of 2000 to be exact.

Full blowers...

...you might be right, but I need to know one more thing before I take a guess. Maybe they mentioned it, but I didn't hear how much pavement he has remaining. Not knowing that, and having seen this done a few times while I was at Tyndall, I think there's a chance he might be reaching for the hook. One day, while I was in the Tyndall tower, I watched a QF-4 take the approach-end cable at about 160-170 knots. Believe me, that barrier will stop them pretty darn quick. But...if that hook misses...better reach for the handles!

That thought did arise in my mind, but I don't know how much runway they have left. Is there a speed limitation on the hook system? This isn't an F-14 thats used to being slammed into the carrier and its arresting gear! I would assume that the easiest thing to do is a go around, that is if they have enough room left.

Galazy Hooters parties are fun-
actually Galazy5 I had a lot of fun at the fighter squadron, and things flying here in AWACS are different, even the O'Club here is a little more subdued (though our NATO bubbas rock the house every night  Smile ) but we are better playing Crud  Smile
OUr flying is different and our parties are different, though we still bring in Hooters girls. Actually we go to Hooters for lunch all the time, not as bad as the Navy at Norfolk, but we own the Hooters in OKC  Smile

The thing with the Show is it was edited for TV, they director who got the callsign 'Hollywood' (go figure) was cool but as a said picked the people on that class for a reason the B classes are normally 8 people they focus on 3.

As of this mornings paper....AFP had the lowest ratings of any CBS show, with an average of 1.3 million viewers on its two night run...Therefor, it is gone, cancelled.

Oh and I almost forgot, when they were filming it was supposed to be a documentary style program for a couple of hours, aparently they (post 9-11) edited it into a TV show. Another reason it seemed odd on TV.

So, it will not be on tomorrow night at 8:00? Is there any where we can go to see the episodes that were not aired?

I read somewhere that CBS will probably put it on over the summer. While I agree with much of what has been said about the show, I found it entertaining to watch, and I look forward to seeing the remaining episodes.
