The Size Of Nellis Afb?

Sun Apr 07, 2002 8:24 pm

In the world of Air Force Bases, how big of an operation is Nellis (Las Vegas)?

Is it in any jeopardy of being shut down?

If I understand right, the Thunderbirds are based there. What other groups/aircraft types are based there?

Thanks

Nellis is in no real danger of shutting down. THe Air Force Fighter Weapons School is there and the huge Red Flag exercises are run there. I finished one late last year and go again in month myself. Dreamland is the huge testing area to the northwest along with the huge bombing range. Also at the base there is a huge red horse squadron and many other tenants.

Nice pic BTW.

Nellis and all its gunnery and other ranges is about 60-70% the size of the state of Nevada.
Most of the land is useless for anything else (apart as a wildlife sanctuary which it actually is, most military terrain has abundant wildlife that doesn't mind the occasional bomb or jetblast too much, the animals know to stay out of the dangerzone).

The USGS is correct. The picture posted by Schreiner is indeed Groom Lake.

well, Groom Lake is part of Nellis AFB, just not all of it (it's a very small part in fact).

You can try the Air Force Units Search Engine on
http://www.globemaster.de/html/skyunits.html

When you search for NELLIS, you should get all aircraft operating units homebased at Nellis AFB.

The base proper (14,000 acres) is in the middle of the pack among AF bases. The Nellis Range Complex is another 2.8 million acres.
