A6 Intruder-how Long In Service

Thu Apr 11, 2002 10:26 am

Last weekend I saw the video,The Flight of the Intruder, and was impressed by it's'performance' on film. I understand that this a/c was used in Vietnam but is it still in use today? Also, is there a replacement for the A6 in the near future? Thanks for your replies.

The A-6 has been removed from service with the Navy and Marine Corps. The EA-6 is still flying and doing yeoman duty.

The F-18 has assumed the roles once filled by the Intruder. (Read the book Flight of the Intruder...Much much better than the movie.)

I believe that the Intruder left service between 1994 and 1996. Unfortunately, no direct replacement has ever gotten to the carrier deck. The F-14 picked up the heavy bombing mission and does a heck of a job, but has stretched the air crews to the edge. The A-12 was supposed to replace the A-6 but was cancelled. The A-6F and A-6G were also cancelled as replacements to the A-6E in the late 80s and 90s.
