George Bush's Avenger

Tue Jun 11, 2002 11:20 am

Do you guys know if GWB flew a blue Avenger during WW2?

I got a photo of one and it says "Lt. George Bush" on it.

Still in the upload queue though

George HW Bush flew in WWII. I thought a mock up of his plane was in Fredricksburg TX at the Nimitz Museum.

Lt George W Bush, flew and his Delta is on display at Ellington Field in Houston.

There are a couple of Avenger's making the rounds that have been painted as Bush's plane during WWII The blue scheme was pretty much standard for Pacific theatre TMF/TBM's.

I was talking about George Bush Sr.

But thanks for the explanation guys. I asked the guy who owned the Avenger and he said that this one is the original and they have made copies of it.

George Bush the Elder flew TBM's in WW II. He was shot down and resuced by a submarine. His crewmen did not make it. George Bush the younger flew F-102A's in the Texas ANG.

GW would have had a rather hard time flying anything but a training toilet in WWII. In fact, I think he was born after the war ended. In fact I'm sure he was born after the end of the war.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Anyway, GH Bush did indeed fly, and was shot down, in WWII. Yes, the aircraft was blue (he was a naval pilot after all) and, no that is not one of his airplanes in the above picture.

PRes George W Bush flew at the 147 FW, 111 FS 'Ace in the Hole'
at Ellington Field (then Ellington AFB) in SE Houston. The TXANG unit is till there ( I am trying to transition to it in fact)

There is a Dagger on Display just inside the Guard area with Lt G W Bush under the canopy. It was dedicated when Bush was still Texas Governor.

Former PResident GHW Bush was in Fredricksurg, TX for the dedication of the avenger at the Nimitz museum. There are some pics there of him and the airplane type. Cool museum check it out if you can.

LOT 767-300ER, a note on the paint job on the TBM is your picture. The paint scheme was one used by the U.S. Navy around the beginning of WW II. The only TBM's (TBF's actually), that might have had this paint scheme in combat, would have been the 6 airplanes that were used in the Battle of Midway in June, 1942. They flew their missions from Midway Island. After that, the Navy paint scheme went to a dark blue with no red circle (meat ball) in the center of the star. It was felt that the meat ball could easily be mistaken for the red circle used by the Japanese. The airplane is authentic, but the paint scheme is not. Ex-President Bush's airplane would have been in the later paint scheme.
