Question On AF1 Pilot Salary.

Thu Jul 11, 2002 1:52 pm

Greetings folks...
Recently I saw an National Geographic TV special on Air Force One, or rather the history of the planes carrying the President. Now we all know that the majority of US-based 747 pilots earned a minimum of $200,000 per year, which is also the base salary of the President, not counting his other benefits & perks. The pilot of the VC-25A is a 20-year veteran of the USAF and carries the rank of full Colonel. Since he's flying the aircraft that carrying the most powerful person in the free world...does he earned the equivalent of his commercial airline's counterparts?? Does anyone believe any 747 pilot should earn more than the President of the United States?? It would be ironic, to say the least, if the Colonel has a better paycheck than his Supreme Commander. All opinions/insights welcome. I'm curious to hear what you all will say. Thanks & regards.  Wink/being sarcastic

The President now makes $400,000 a year BTW, a raise was passed during Clinton's last year in office to take effect with the next PRez.

I don't think US military personell are paid based on the job they do, but rather based on the rank they hold (with maybe extra compensation for being based in expensive areas like Washington DC).
AFAIK that information is publicly available.

The annual pay for a Colonel (O-6) including flight pay and all allowances and if he or she lives off base near Andrews is $118,148. The annual pay for a Lieutenat Colonel (O-5) is $103,658.
