US Fighter Jets

Wed Sep 18, 2002 3:28 pm

Hello All,

I don't post very much in this forum, but I've become more interested in military aviation and would love to learn more. I am aware the the US Navy and US Air Force fly fighter jets, F-14s, F-15s, F-16s and F-18s. I saw them at the Chicago Air Show back in August and was marveled by the maneuvers they were performing. Anyways I was hoping someone could clarify the differences between the jets.

Which jets does the Navy use and which do the AF use? Are they all fighter/bombers or do they each have special properties. Can they all fly at supersonic speeds? Where are they each stationed? Are they near the crisis zone in the Middle East, near Afghanistan and Iraq?

Do other airforces fly these jets or are they exclusive to the USAF and US Navy? Pretty much all the cool specs about these aircraft that I hear so much about would be appreciated.

Thanks so much and I know I'll learn a lot from the wealth of minds here.

Sounds like you should pay your library a visit. There are plenty of books answering all these questions and more about the fighter jets of the world.

The net isn't the best source of information when you're looking for anything but quick answers.

Cheers,
Fred

Well if you want specs check out a Janes book, most libaries have them.

Heres a good website for a pretty good overview: http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/index.html

I will go only over the generalaties here.

Most fighters have multi-mission cabillities, but they are never as good as a true bomber. There are many speclized aircraft too, such as the Prowler (the the E- and such) and the Sealth Fighter.

Most can fly at supersonic speeds, but most require the use of after burner, which burns a ton a fuel and drasticlly shortens the range. There are a few that can fly in Super Cruise which means that they are able to cruise for extended periods at Super sonic speeds. One such aircraft is the F-22.

Generally there are aircraft near the crisis zones, but in the case of the Navy they generally have a Carrier Task Force to any spot on the world within 48 hrs, which is best classfied as a floating airbase. Now in a battle situation the aircraft particpating in the strikes are at the nearest airbase that they can get to the warzone.

Some other Air Forces fly our aircraft, but in most cases its not the newest and greatest thing. But in many cases they are available for sale to any friendily nation that is approved by the government.

If you want more indepth stuff, I suggest consulting your local library.
At worst, you screw up and die.

USAF: F-15 Eagle, F-15E Strike Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon (more commonly referred to as the "Viper").
USN: F-14 Tomcat, F/A-18 Hornet, F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

The F-14 and F-15 are dedicated interceptors/fighters, with little ground attack capability (although the Navy is modyfying many Tomcats to have improved such capabilities). The F-15E is an exception, as it is a true multi role (two seater BTW) fighter designed with ground attack and deep penetration in mind. The F-14 is unique in that it can be armed with the AIM-54 Phoenix, a very long range air-to-air missile (about 100nm).
The F-16 and F/A-18 have always been cheap, light, multi role fighters produced in great numbers.

The F-16 is operated by numerous countries. The F-14 has only been exported to Iran. The F-15 is also flown by Japan (locally produced), Saudi Arabia, Israel and soon, Korea. The F-18 is operated by Canada, Spain, Switzerland, Finland, Kuwait, Thailand, and Australia.

On http://www.globemaster.de/ you should find most of the information you need. At least it is a good portal to get information about military aviation of the US Forces.
You can find out which units operate certain aircraft and where they are located. It also has an aircraft fact sheet page and tons of useful links.
