US MIG 29 Acquiration From Moldova

Tue Sep 24, 2002 4:49 am

What was the disposition of the 21 MIG 29's that the United States acquired from Moldova back in 1997? Are they being clandestinely used (such as for evaluations),or did they sell them to a friendly nation that had the 29's in the arsenal?

They are with the USAF. They may have tested them for a while and then parked them, or they may still be using them, for enemy simulation in training etc.

Thanks for the info LY744...I was thinking possibly they could of been used in the "aggressor" training, but I never heard anything following '97.... Not that it would ever happen, but it would be rather interesting to see a few of them in front line service!  Smile

Can I say no to MD88captain? Why yes I can. The aircraft are in storage in a location that, for some reason, is classified. And no, it is not Davis-Monthan or Nellis. Do I know? Yes. Can I tell you? Sorry, no.

There is one MiG-29 that is displayed out doors at the Patterson portion of Wright-Patterson AFB. When I saw this airplane (a couple of years ago), it was outside the Air Force Museum restoration shops without any engines. I was told the engines were being run at the engine test facility at Tullahoma, Alabama.
