What's The Most Produced Jet Fighter?

Sat Nov 30, 2002 9:43 am

Hi folks...
Just curious as to what was, or is the most numerous of all jet fighter in the world? I want to say the McDonnell F-4 Phantom, which did see slightly more than 5,000 airframes assembled. And the North American F-86 Sabre saw over 5,000 examples as well. But what about the MIG-21? Surely they were produced in large numbers. How many Lockheed F-16s are there now? And perhaps the Northrop F-5 series ranks up there as well? I'm just looking for some roundabout numbers on any & all types of jet fighters. All replies & opinions welcome. Regards.

MiG-21 by far. As for numbers, I'm thinking 8000, but I'm not sure. There are just over 4000 F-16's out there right now.

The answer will surely be a MiG. As I'm too lazy to dig through my bookshelves (it's been a rough week) I'm not sure if the -17 or -21 would win. A hunch tells me the -21 though. And I believe the number will be more than 8000.

There is no doubt that the Fishbed has the honours. The F-4 is the most produced US jet fighter however. The number of MiG-21s produced is usually quoted as "over 8000".

I would suspect that it is the Mig 21 family also, which includes numbers chinese built versions also.

I wonder if the MIG 15/17 family wouldn't be a close second though.

MiG-19 will also be a good contender, especially if you count all the Chinese built aircraft and derivatives (the Chinese are now building MiG-21s too of course).

Jwenting,

Of the MiG-15/17/19 family, the 19 was the least successfull design in terms of number built. As a consequent development of the original MiG-15 concept, it had its merits, but came just too late and was kind of "outperformed by design" by the newer concepts such as the MiG-21. Also, the Mikoyan folks seemed to have pushed the envelope too far, so in various points the MiG-17 appeared superior to the 19. Former eastern block Air Forces sometimes even retired/mothballed all of their MiG-19's whilst keeping the MiG-17 in service(I am absolutely sure about the Bulgarian Air Force)

I know the -19 was not the technical success the Soviets wanted it to be seen as.
But the Chinese did build a huge number of them, many of which are still in use today.
The Chinese models are mainly marketted as a ground attack aircraft, a role to which it is better suited than the air defense mission the Soviets had in mind.
The Chinese version has also been exported in numbers to many other countries, most notably Pakistan who flew them until earlier this year.

It is definitely the MiG 21 , the production numbers for all the MiG 21 models exceed 11,000 not 8,000 as previously stated .MiG 21 F , MiG 21 PFM and MiG 21-Bis being produced the largest. The exact number of the Chinese J-7 (MiG 21F) is not known .

The german 'AERO'- magazine once described the Mig -23 "Flogger" as being "probably the most-built aircraft in history" production numbers of which have alledgedly grown way beyond the 30.000-airframes-mark.
Can anybody here confirm this ?

Around 600+ Mig-21's have also been produced by India under license at Hindustan Aeronautics plant at Nasik.

Gannymed. The Mig-23 is not by any stretch the most produced aircraft id history. If it passed 30,000 then indeed it is the most for a jet (which I doubt).

The Me-109 or Fw-190 was over 38,000. Agian though, I'm too lazy to search for the estimated number.

Pretty sad when the books in question are within 10 or 20 feet.

IMissPiedmont, you are probably right about the Me-109,but Aero N°114 (1985 ) clearly states that by 1984 the former Soviet Union had about 31.000+ Mig 23/27 'Flogger A,B,C,D,F,J,M', etc. in Service, let alone the numerous export aircraft delivered to the air forces of Algiers,Kuba,Egypt,ex-RDA,Irak,Libya,Vietnam and India with the latter building the type under licence starting 1984.I don't have exact figures though about how many have been exported out of the URSS.

Then I guess we indeed have a winner in this contest. I am truly surprised.

Now then. Anyone wnat to debate the most produced aircraft type? Is it the Me-109 or Fw-190? I truly do not remember but I'm sure it's one of the two.

Oh. Of course. I tend to think of larger aircraft by my nature, especially round engined aircraft.

Just need to add this. I asked the Russian Expert today and the answer to the original question is indeed the MiG-21. Approximately 15000 built. The MiG-23/27 is about half that number.

The C-172 stands though as the most produced aircraft in history.

Thanks to each & every reply.  Wink/being sarcastic A extra thanks for IMissPiedmont for his replies. Looks like it's the MiG-21 Fishbed as the world's most numerous jet fighter. Interesting thing about the Cessna 172 being the most produced aircraft ever. I learn something new everyday here. Best regards.  Wink/being sarcastic

And the second most produced is the Cessna 150/152, and the third most is the Cessna 182. Or is it the other way around? Either way, Cessna has the top 3 slots, I'm pretty sure. Need to find some facts to back that up, however.

Ganymed,

I believe your source has a typo - it is really easy to just put to many zeros  Smile
31,000 is just not a credible number. 3,100 sound about right.
