RIP.....Joe Foss

Sat Jan 04, 2003 9:12 pm

Medal of Honor winner Joe Foss died Wendsday.....He was 87.

In four months of combat in the Pacific during World War II he shot down 26 airplanes and was shot down once himself. He led Charles Lindbergh on unauthorized combat missions (Lindbergh was a civilian tech rep during the war and wasn't supposed to do that due to the "propagada value" of somebody downing his arse)

He later became the youngest governor in this history of the state of South Dakota and later hosted the TV shows, "American Sportsman" and "The Outdoorsman".

In his later years he was still defending American rights and values serving as president of the National Rifle Association from 1987 to 1990. He made headlines just last year when some incompetent airport security guards attempted to seize his Medal of Honor in Phoenix when he was attempting to board a flight to give a commencement speech at the United States Military academy in West Point. In the general airport security of post 9/11 of the member of Thousands Standing Around claimed that the medal could be used as a ninja thowing star. Joe eventually had to mail back the medal, which was the one he was issued in 43 with FDR's signature on it.

Yep, that Medal of honor is a dangerous thing today. In fact, to the present US "government", it indeed is. Another true patriot dies, how many more do we have left?

RIP General Foss.

I believe Foss was instrumental in setting up the postwar SD Air National Guard.

Correct. He is accepted as the founding member of the SD-ANG.

Sorry I left that out.

I believe Foss was also the first commissioner of the American Football League from 1960 to 1966. Tom Brokaw called Foss a prime example of what he termed America's "Greatest Generation". Our republic will stand as long as we turn out men and women like Joe Foss. RIP.

Big coverage Thursday on all of the PHX news stations. Missing man formation flyby and climbout occurred right over my head yesterday, which scared me at first not knowing what was going on. But the news stories reminded me that we lost one of our best.
Thank you, Mr. Foss for your service. And my condolences to his family.
