Hello Alessandro.

I sure hope this rumor isn't true. We can't believe it untill we see it.

So far there's been nothing mentioned about this on CNN's website. I suspect they would have news like this in big letters if it was confirmed or just a rumor!

Apparently that screwball Saddam has offered the public in Iraq cash rewards for shooting down enemy aircraft, with an additional bonus amount if they capture the pilots! I can't remember the different amounts of money, but it was a lot. Who knows if that's true or not.

Nothing at all on the news, they'd have had the media go to the wreckage and/or any captured crew by now you'd have thought.
While it is not impossible, probably unlikely, most attacks on the city are with stand-off weapons, also if the Iraqis are so stupid to think that lighting oil and wood fires around Baghdad will really confuse the weapon systems due to the huge clouds of black smoke they are producing, they are very mistaken, it might bother some laser-guided weapons, but not GPS.
Seems rather typical of them, they thought that using the tactics that they found Iran with in the 1980's, would work in 1991, they didn't.

Most likely they shot down a cruise missile or a UAV.
In 1991 as well as in Yugoslavia, those were called as aircraft by the Iraqis (and Yugoslavians in Yugoslavia obviously) to increase their killcount.

It's unlikely, but not impossible.

Remember, nobody thought the Serbs could shoot down a stealthy F-117 and still managed to get it down.

AAA is like a shotgun.

Put enough metal in the air and eventually the odds are you will hit something.

Racko,

The reports I read about the Serbian F-117 shoot down was because it was used by the French commander in low altitude operations. The type that the aircraft was not designed for.

That F-117 made a severe tactical error.
It flew the exact same route several nights in a row and was spotted, giving the Serbs time to spring a trap.
Had the pilot adhered to standard doctrine and flown different routes each night that couldn't have worked.

I'm curious as to what type of aircraft with a three man crew would be flying directly over Baghdad. As far as I know only stealth aircraft, F-117 and B-2 are flying over Baghdad. The only tactical aircraft with more than a two man crew is the EA-6B. However the EA-6B is usually used in more of a standoff role. I doubt they would be flying directly over Baghdad.

Sounds like a bunch of BS coming from Iraqi news "sources".

You know I was wondering that too.

A three man crew is an odd number for tactical US aircraft.

In fact, it's a very odd number indeed...

There are no aircraft with 3 man crews in the US military AFAIK, except maybe some helicopters and cargo aircraft and those wouldn't fly over Baghdad yet (unless on a parachutist drop, in which case quite a few more people would be on board).

EA-6 has a 4 man crew...

seems like it was a UAV that was shot down, and deployed its parachute, making local iraqis thinking theyve shot down a manned plane when infact they didnt

Interesting theory Planespotterx, but I would have thought that the US would not want the UAV to land in one piece so it doesn't seem likely that it would come down by parachute. Look at how much effort thet took in destroying their downed Apache. I'm sure that there is plenty of technology in the UAV that they wouldn't want the Iraqis to get.

That UAV shown on the TV was a British Army Phoenix over Basra, I still reckon those parachutes over Baghdad were ALARMs fired from RAF Tornados, one mode is for them to fire upward, coming down slowly on a parachute, to beat the tactic of the enemy turning off radars when aircraft appear to guard against anti-radiation missile attack, if the Baghdad network kept their radars switched off, the ALARMs would continue down on parachutes not being reactivated, so their parachutes would not be dumped and the rocket motor reactivated.
They never found any pilots or wreckage did they? If they had it would have been shown for propaganda.
