2 AH-64s Captured By Iraqis

Mon Mar 24, 2003 7:00 pm

TV reports claim 2 AH-64's have come down over Iraq, and are in the enemys hands, one Apache is intact, showing that one probobally came down due to mechanical problems, what i dont get is, why didnt the pilots use the gun turrent or missiles to kill any iraqi troops that were closing in, could they have done this??
Its not the fall that kills u, its the sudden stop at the end..

Clearly an Apache, close ups show the Hellfire missiles still in place.
Maybe a mechanical problem, as it looks very intact, I've only seen one chopper, possibly a second (if there was one) could have driven off or shot down?
If they see a bunch of vehicles and/or troops, sure they can engage, though if they were fighting to keep the chopper flying they may be otherwise occupied.

I heard on the news the 2 Apaches that have been captured are the latest models, the type which the RAF are receiving. And that the RAF have them guarded 24 hours to stop anyone taking a peak at whats on board. If this is so, shouldnt the USAF blow the intact helicopter up to stop the iraqi's trying to use any technology found onboard?

just saw in CNN, a while ago, the Iraqi information minister has said that they have two apache helicopters and that they do not want to show pictures of the pilots, as the americans might accuse them of violating the geneva convention on POWS.

still kind of sketchy, but you can really see on the video of those hellfire missiles. and those iraqis cheering.

The helicopter is from the 11th Aviation Regiment, based in Illesheim, Germany. Iraq claims "farmers" have shot it down.

Can't see any damage from guns.

That is my old unit and base.

Actually based on the markings it is one of the Air Cav battalions. Most likely 2/6. They where attached to 1st Armoured.

I don't see any obvious damage either.

The story on how this one ended up down is going to be an iteresting one.

Actually, if it is one of the 11 Avn Air Cav Battalions, I wonder why it is sporting that 1st Cav decal over the crossed calvery sword.

I wonder if the USAF has trackers on the choppers, will find them on satellite, and send a 1000lb bomb flying its way, to stop the iraqis using it first..

I doubt it.

This is the army we are talking about Big grin

From what I read on CNN it sounds like it was one hell of a firefight on that raid.

The video was probably recorded soon after the accident, and the chopper has by now been brought to a safe place. The Longbow is probably more capable than any aircraft the Iraqis. However, I doubt the Iraqis have anybody who could repair it or anybody who is able how to learn to fly it fast enough before the war is over.

Hopefully in a week or two we will have it back.

I say destroy it. My fear is that the Iraqis will strip the avionics out of it and hand it over to the Russians. It might sound paranoid but I bet they would love to get their hands on that equipment.

I don't think the Iraqi's have the capability of striping the technology out of it and flying it to Russia, not too many flights coming out of Iraq right now.

The Allies will be in Baghdad soon, so I don't think the aircraft is going anywhere.

There doesn't appear to be any damage, perhaps a mechanical forced them down. It also appears that the Iraqi's have not found the pilots either, hopefully it can stay that way so they can be rescued.

The Iraqis are not going to take it through Iran, the Russians would. Considering Russia-Iran defense ties the Iranians would be more than happy to let the Russians use their country as a transit point for such equipment.

A report I just read on the internet filed by a journalist who visited the helicopter crash site stated that it appeared intact except for signs of shots on its rear rotor. The tail number of helicopter is 95135 (i.e. 99-5135) ... as we can all tell from the photos, it is an AH-64D Longbow Apache. 99-5135 is one of a batch that are remanufactured AH-64As.

I'm also surprised that it hasn't yet been "taken out" by the USAF. I suppose the visuals on TV were the first indicaton of where it had come to ground. Seems like they need to have a few more of those Predator drones with their Hellfire missiles flying around ...

Other AH-64 crews from that unit have reported that hardly any missiles were fired at Iraqi armour, as they were so close to civilian areas.

A newspaper is reporting that the helicopter was not from 11 Avn Bde but Belonged to 1/227th which is the aviation arm of the 1st cav.

Which explains the logo.

I wonder if the 30mm AP ammo used by the Apache can penetrate the top armor of a T-55, T-62 or T-72?

GOD DAMMIT! Why couldn't the pilots just blow them selves up if they though for a second that they might be in enemy hands? I hope we didn't just 'give' it to them cuz that'd just be messed the fuck up!  Pissed

Do the Iraqis even know how to operate that thing, Jane's Combat sims cannot be their only hand in the deck.
