Every time I see a Sikorsky H-60 I always wonder what this is.

Are you refering to the coffee can looking thing behind the rotor?

It is a IR Jammer.

Keeps protable missles from locking on you.

It is a pretty standard piece of gear but I will do a lousy job of explaining it.

Picture going into a dark room and looking at a light bulb. Then somebody turns on the light all of a sudden and then switching them off again. Usually if you aren't expecting it you see this "hot spot" where the light bulb was for a few seconds.

That is what those jammers do. Those little squares are mirrors that heat up.

The idea is if an infrared seeker locks in on the aircraft that jammer will create little hot spots on the seeker to the point where it can't distigish between a real target and one of those hot spots. So it looses track of you.

This is the samething they are talking about fitting to airliners now. Some bizjets allready have kits for it.
