Poland Goes For 48 F-16's

Fri Apr 18, 2003 9:31 pm

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/2958381.stm

Poland has ordered 48 F-16 fighters from Lockheed-Martin to modernize it's airforce. The 3.5 billion dollar order will also include training and spares.

The Lockheed defeated proposals from Saab and Dassault to win the order.

Does anyone know what block series Poland is buying? It seems like the F-16 line just keeps racking up orders. Not to bad for an aircraft that was once looked down on by those in the U.S.A.F. when it initially entered service. Its production line has outlived the F-14A/B/D, F-15C, and the F/A-18A/B/C/D

I guess it's official now, but it's been known for a while now.. and reportedly they are block 52 Cs and Ds.

CX, the F-16 has not outlasted the F-15 and F/A-18 in production.
Both models are still being built today (in upgraded versions of course, but an F-16C Block 60 is quite a different beast from the F-16A block 10 or early F-16Cs and might better be called F-16G (E being taken by the XL)).

F-14 entered production over 10 years before the F-16 and had a far smaller market that was saturated sooner.

Poland selected Block 52 F-16's. They also selected the PW F-100 as the engine to power the aircraft. One of my co-workers worked on F-16's in the USAF and he said he preferred the GE F110 over the F100. Anyway, Poland got a good deal along with getting a good aircraft.

Jwenting,

CX747 was pretty specific in listing the "F-15C, and the F/A-18A/B/C/D" all of which are not in production.

The F-15E/K are the only F-15's that are still in production. F-15E deliveries for the USAF end in 4th quarter this year. The -15K production run of 40 ends in mid 2008.

The F/A-18C/D are still available but are not actively being marketed and it's not likely that the US NAVY would need new C/D's now that the E/F/G line is up and running at almost full rate.
As far as my research shows the last C/D that was produced was a F/A-18C built in Halli for the Finnish Air Force. The last US built -18C/D was delivered to Canada in 1998.

I just noticed that this post was revived from a year ago.

The information is still accurate as is, if it had been posted in April of 03.

I have done some research on the subject. The F/A-18 order fell through.

The only Western aircraft that Poland operates are.

(4) Kaman SH-2G

And people once said that General Dynamics couldn't design anything smaller than an 18-wheeler.

Sinlock, add a #3 to that list...

Poland took delivery of the first of its CN-295s.

I also heard an unconfirmed rumor that they were getting used C-130s.

Speaking of F-16's and 18wheelers, has anyone ever seen the F-16 that the air force took and modified to fold up and fit inside a tractor trailer? It was an honest to goodness jet that used to fly missions, its stripped of all the avionics, engine, etc and now used in the Air Force Experience display at air shows and other events now.

The last US built -18C/D was delivered to Canada in 1998.

I didn't know that Canada operates the C/D at all. I was under the impression that RCAF operates exclusively the A/Bs.

You are almost certainly correct on that one Triple seven. Sinlock must have meant either Switzerland or Finland (or possibly Kuwait). Sadly, Canada has been steadily reducing its CF-18 force for the past decade.

Aren't Polish troops in Iraq? I wouldn't be surprised if Poland cashed in its chips and so the US gov made sure it got a good deal.

I don't know if this is still true or not, but earlier this year they did have the third largest contingent of troops in Iraq behind the US and UK

Well that is the rumor why the US Forces had to give up their M1911A1's for Beretta M9's.

We got use of Aviano in the trade.

Do you mean use Aviano during Kosovo? The Beretta has replaced the M1911 since the late 80's

Yes, that Aviano.

It has been a US base for a while, long before Kosovo.
