Why Would F-18s Land At Scottsdale, AZ?

Tue Jul 29, 2003 4:18 am

Question:
Yesterday, Sunday 7/27, I was treated to 2 fabulously earsplitting and chest rattling afterburner takeoffs from about 100-150 feet away at Scottsdale Airpark (I work next to the end of the runway and was lucky enough to see them taxiing up to catch the takeoffs).
While I truly appreciated the display, I had to wonder just what they were doing there. I noted the tail markings but have unfortunately forgotten them. They did have (I believe) the little auxiliary fuel tanks on their bellies.

Were they low on fuel or is this normal? Any guesses even?

Thanks!

Could be anything.

Weather diversion, fuelstop on a ferryflight, temporary stationing (crosstraining with local units for example).

I considered all of those, but since Luke Air Force Base and PHX Sky Harbor are nearby, I assumed they would avoid the smaller airport with the jet noise problems.

I'm guessing they had not enough fuel for comfort.

Is there a national guard presence on the field?

They would likely avoid PHX so as not to disturb the flow of traffic there, most major airports are congested enough as it is without unscheduled military flights messing up the traffic pattern Big grin

Luke might have been a more logical choice indeed if it were a ferry flight, but remember these guys were navy  Laugh out loud

Scottsdale is definately a nice airport to land at. I've done pattern work there plenty of times!!! Could it be that Luke is closed on Sundays and therefore the F/A-18s needed to land at a facility that was open?

No National Guard there.

CX747 might be on to something there as well.

No idea when they got there. Sorry!
Just glad I saw the departure! I'm sure the neighbors weren't amused though.

I do find it strange they would go to SDL. At KDVT, where I fly out of, they have a big poster on the wall showing Scottsdales noise abatement procedure.
If they are worried about Cessnas making too much noise, F-18s must be hell for them.

Ive seen F/A-18s as Sky Harbor before, as well as many other fighters, so its not too uncommon for them to fly into PHX.

So, in conclusion, I have no idea why they were there.  Smile

Beefmoney, do you fly out of one of the flightschools at DVT? I flew out of Westwing when I was working on my private.

Excellent!!! How long have you been training there? I was there from January to May! Flew their 152s and a few of their 172RGs for my complex signoff.

Ah, yeah!!! Thats awesome!

Ive been flying out of Westwind for a good 2 years now. Got my students license earlier this year, and working towards my private right now.

And wouldnt you know it, Ive flown N6339B about 4 times!

Good luck on the private. How close are you to finishing? I always enjoyed going over to Scottsdale for touch and goes. It was a change from the constant use of Deer Valley's strips. I flew 6339B more than any other bird. I soloed in 96736 though.

Ill be turning 17 in February, so I should be getting my private around then.

I go over to Scottsdale every once in a while, but the corporate traffic makes it hard to get any pure vanilla touch-and-gos in. Ive had to do a 360 to accomidate a learjet or gulfstream 75% of every traffic pattern Ive done there. Thats why I prefer to do touch and gos at:
1. Deer Valley
2. Glendale
3. Goodyear

Ive gotten to know the ATC'ers at DVT so well that I know exactly what they are going to say, when they are going to say it, how they are going to say it, what kind of response they want, and how they will respond to it.

It makes doing touch and gos more pleasurable and relaxing since I dont have to worry about any wacky clearances that Ive never heard before.

"Cessna 5525H, make right traffic runway 7R, cleared for takeoff."

BTW: The last time I flew 96736, the push to talk button quit working so I had to cut my flight short, try and make a landing at DVT without a radio at the peak traffic of the day, and squawk the darn thing up. Its on my bad list now.  Smile

Also, do you ever listen to DVT ATC on the internet? Its great to blast over the speakers and listen to while your doing work around the house. I get my feed here: www.azhanger.com
They give you ATC feeds from almost every airport in Phoenix! I love it.

No radios in 96736, hmm I could have told you that it would happen at one point or another. How did you handle the "No Coms" landing? Was an instructor with you?

RE: Why Would F-18s Land At Scottsdale, AZ?

Nope, I was solo.

Its not like I was in class B PHX airspace or anything. I was just in the pattern doing touch and gos. But, after I did 3 or so, I was climbing out and ATC gave me a traffic call out. I replied back to them, but when I did my transmission sounded funny to me. A couple seconds later, they gave me the exact same traffic call out. I again replied him in sight. Again, they came back with "How do you read". I called back "Loud and clear". They still didnt hear me.

So, I fumbled around in the cockpit with the radios. Switched from #1 to #2, and called them up. Still no response. Fumbled around some more with the buttons. Nothings working. I am able to recieve fine, but I just cant transmit. At this point, I am on downwind with an IFR jet inbound to the same runway. This being my first problem I have ever encountered solo, I wasnt quit sure what to do with the situation. I mean, I was closed traffic, so they knew what my intentions were. And because of that, I wasnt sure whether I should squawk 7600 or not. Would it have helped the situation? I figured they knew that I had a radio problem because I complied with all the instructions they gave me, just without giving a reply to them, and they never again asked if I could hear them.

So, I just finished the pattern, they gave me clearance to land, I landed, pulled off the runway, and hoped I could make contact with ground. I tried once, twice, 3 times, no contact. 4th time, it worked, and I got clearance to taxi back to westwind.

But, again, being stucks in the pattern at the 2nd busiest airport in AZ without the ability to talk was not the most peaceful moment of my life, and it is currently the only problem I have ever encountered whil flying solo.

Sure, it wasnt that big of a deal, I wasnt more 3 miles from the airport at any time, but my fear of pissing of an ATC'er by doing somthing they didnt know I was doing kept me on the edge of my seat.

But, I recently flew 96736 again, and it had new push to talk buttons, so I hope that plane wont give me that problem again.

Yea, some of those 152s have pretty bad radios. Especially the Zulu sisters. I never flew them because my instructor refused do to their junky radio stacks.

Well, they have their fair share of problems. But, Westwinds 152s are definatly some of the best equipped 152s Ive ever seen. But, on the other hand, that equipment rarely works  Smile

I cant remember how many times Ive been up putting around and the artificial horizon just tumbles down and stops working. Just keep reminding myself not to get within 80 miles of a cloud with those avionics.

They probably landed there to get gas. Military bases are notorious for giving a slow turnaround. Civilian airports are generally more efficient and more enjoyable to get gas and take a break.

I should work Sundays more often!

I see 4 fighters parked at the airport at the moment (1:45 PM Sunday). I can't see what they are from here where I work.

Not sure if they will be leaving while I'm still here, but I hope so. Unfortunately, they won't be starting the takeoff roll on "my" end of the runway this time if they do take off today!

Edit: They look like F-18s again.

For anyone nearby, They are getting ready to take off now, get here if you can! (2:19 PM)

An Answer?

Mon Sep 08, 2003 6:40 am

Cool!
2 of them took off, 2 still parked with open canopies.
I saw a guy with his young son and wife pull up to watch as well. I asked if he knew what they were doing here and he said the HE had a meeting with them for lunch. Not sure if he was pulling my leg, but that's what he said! I know there is a good restaurant at the airport, and others within about 2 minutes, so it is possible!

Edit: Now 2 Helicopters (Apaches?) just took off, having been parked right next to the F-18s. I hadn't even seen them there! The "meeting" scenario seems more likely, but that gets me back to the original question: Why Scottsdale?

Guess we'll never know....
