Past U.S.A.F. Serial Numbers (Vietnam Era)

Wed Jul 30, 2003 10:19 am

Hi Folks...
Hope some of you remember me. It's been 4 months since my last log-in on here. Long story short, I needed a break from aviation for a while, to basically recharge my passion for it by staying away for a bit. If that makes any sense at all. Anyway, who here knows something about serial numbers from the USAF fleet of 1961? I'm particularly looking for what type aircraft was designed 61-00236? Or perhaps 61-236? I know 61-001 thru 61-040 were assigned to B-52Hs. If anyone should know what type aircrafts were assigned 61-041 thru 61-500, or where I can find them in print, it would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks & regards.

I think you'll find Joe Baugher's site quite helpful:

http://home.att.net/~jbaugher/usafserials.html

According to the above, 61-0221 through 61-0260 (no 5 or 7 digit USAF serials AFAIK) were assigned to "cancelled contract for Republic F-105D Thunderchief"

Hmm, '61 sure was a busy year, those were the days...

well here goes
as you noted 61-0001 to 61-0040 were B-52Hs

61-0261 to 61-0325 were original KC-135As
61-0326 to 61-0330 were original C-135As
61-0331 to 61-0332 were original C-135Bs
Several were converted to KC-135Rs etc, and I have those specific serials if you want them.

(FYI 61-2662 to 61-2674 were C-135Bs and 61-2358 to 61-2373 were C-130Es, 61-2775 to 61-2779 were C-141As, 61-2494-2508 T-37B) I could go on and on, but these are not what you asked for I know.

Many thanks to LY744 & Lt-AWACS for your replies. They were very much helpful & appreciated. 1961 was indeed, a busy year for the USAF in terms of acquired aircrafts. Regards.

The fourth digit of the "61-236" serial may not have been a zero (i.e. 61-0236). Many of the USAF aircraft of that era had their serials painted on the tail with the letters AF directly above the fiscal year, and then alongside that in a larger size the last three digits of the full serial. The missing digit in such cases could be any number, and one usually figures it out by matching the type to serial lists (like Joe Baugher's).

61-0236 : as noted above, an unbuilt F-105D Thud
61-1236 : a Bullpup missile
61-2236 : a Hound Dog missile
61-3236 : an unbuilt Bullpup missile

Looks like that serial is a dud.

Well, not necessarily a dud. When I collected any number under the sun, I logged a couple of missiles on a B-52 at Mildenhall, 61-2217 and 62-0093. But then I realised I was a plane spotter and not a missile spotter.

But the serial presentation with the fiscal year plus the last three only only really applied to planes, and missiles just had them stencilled on in full.

Stencilled serials are not always clear, I'd be interested why the question was asked.

At the risk of being laugh at, and/or frown upon...I'll state my reason why I was interested in serial #61-236. 1961 is my birth year. August 24th is my birthday, which is the 236th day of the year. Out of trivial curiosity, I wanted to see which USAF aircraft had that particular serial number. Okay, you can all point & laugh at me now. I got my answer. Regards.
