Who Here Is Active Duty?

Mon Aug 11, 2003 5:40 am

I don't really spend much time on the military part of a.net, but i was just wondering who here is active duty right now, and where you're stationed and what duty/rank you have.
I'm currently a cadet at USAFA.. hoping to make it through and not sure yet whether I want to fly fighters or larger a/c....

I'm one of 'em...for now. Been a captain for almost three years. ROTC commission. Air traffic control (Airfield Ops - 13Mx) career field.

That's about as many details as I give here on this forum.

By the way, how's the new commandant working out? I worked for him nearly two years. He's about as good as they come!

I am a SSgt at Pope AFB, NC. I work the en-route maintenance, so that is C-5's, C-17's, C-141's, and C-130's.

Jcxp15- I would fly the cargo planes if I were you!

Just my opinion of course,

I am a fairly new Captain on Active duty, at Tinker AFB. I am an Rated Air Weapons Officer on AWACS. I went through ROTC and commisioned in 1999, though I have been up to the University of the Air Force- in 1999 for an OAF program.

There are allot of active guys on the forum, just read through the old posts and you can get good views of flying and military issues.

welcome! and good luck!

I'm not 'owned' by active duty per se, but I've been 'mobilized to active duty' for an extended period of time. Commissioned through OTS in '01, flying big airplanes (some of the fighter guys refer to them as 'targets') on the west coast for AFRC/AMC. A few of my active duty buddies in UPT changed their minds during the first couple of months flying tweets. Some people showed up dead set on T-38s and fighters and had a change of heart after a few months of yanking and banking the tweet around the sky. I would also recommend that you consider the lifestyles: amount of time deployed/gone, mission, base locations, etc. Be sure and poll your faculty and ask some of those type of questions about their experiences at prior aircrew assignments. Good luck!

Lt-AWACS, congratulations on yr promotion, thinking of becoming Capt-AWACS??

Thanks (4 years no felonies), I thought of changing but I've been Lt-AWACS so long, everyone knows me as that. I changed on some other forums, but figured I'd stay with it for here for now.

If you want to get lots of hours come fly the E-3, we've been deployed constantly since 1977 through June of 2003, the longest of any AF wing  Smile Of course now that we are all home for the first time ever who knows what we will do. 12 years of ONW and OSW planning down the tube LOL.

Remember the war doesn't start till the fat boys fly  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Gen. Rosa seems like a really good guy, with really good intentions for the Academy. We've had a lot of changes here, making the Academy more like the real Air Force in terms of professionalism, training etc... I guess we'll see how things go.

Jcxp15, I got a question for you. My cousin has been looking at the Academy but has anything but stellar grades (he's maintained a C average). He swears he'll bring his average up to B, etc., etc. The only community service he's got is CAP. What are his chances of acceptance? (I've already suggested ROTC to no avail.) Thanks for your help!

AAmericanguy:

There's a lot of factors that determine admissions here. Grades and extra-curricular activities play a huge role though. Now I can't say for sure what chances he would have, as there are so many variables, but I would definately recommend he get that C average up to somewhere around a B+, try for over 1260 on the SAT's, and definately get involved in some type of sport or something. I know my class' average GPA is like a 3.9 (although I had a 3.65) and average SAT is like 1350 (although I had a 1300).. I was really involved in extra-curricular stuff (i.e. captain track team, clubs, community service etc...).
That being said, there are still quite a few people here that didn't have the best grades or SAT scores.. nonetheless, they are still here and as long as they make it to graduation, SAT's, GPA's don't mean anything. If you have any further questions or anything, feel free to drop me a line.

I was supporting our Harriers from VMA-211 "Wake Island Avengers", and VMA-311 "Tomcats" from the U.S.S. Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) floating around in the gulf for what seemed like a very long time.

LTJG-USN

Currently in Navy Advanced Strike Training at NAS Meridian flying the T-45C Goshawk. Haven't seen much of the "real" Navy yet, but if you want to do something new and exciting everyday, go fighters. I'd imagine that flying heavies could get pretty boring after awhile. There is no other feeling like flying 450mph over the ground at 500ft and doing a practice target attack on an interstate rest-stop! Its a lot of work though and its not for everyone. Get as much information as you can and make your own decision. Good Luck.
