Why Do Fighter Jets Land At Commercial Airports

Thu Feb 12, 2004 10:54 am

I had the priviledge to go on the tarmac at CLE and I saw an A-10 warthog, why was it there? Why do some fighter jets make visits to comercial airports?

When going cross-country, it is usually much easier and faster to land and get gas at a civilian airport. I would prefer them over a military airport any day.

I'm not sure where the statement that it is "faster and easier" to land and get gas at a civilian airport comes from. There certainly are more of them, which may explain the occaisional appearance, but if you take into account that landing fees, parking fees, fueling fees, chock/tiedown fees, start cart fees, LOX filling fees, etc. are imposed on military jets, it's a wonder they even consider it. Often it is more a necessity then a first choice based on many different factors.

When using a military base, things are easier all the way around. And there usually are fewer security concerns as well.

Simply because most ANG bases are at commercial airports. I cannot speak for CLE, but fully a third of flights in TUS are F-16s.

I agree with Ftrguy. We go to civilian airports frequently, even though an Air Force Base is close. I can go into a civilian FBO and have a Jet A truck waiting on me to engage the gust lock so he can pull in and hook up. After landing I can be topped off in 10 minutes on a bad day. Besides, I can check out the local biz jets, and the locals can check out my helicopter, swap a few lies, and be on our way. Many military bases fuel is called for, and will arrive depending on their mission requirements, manning, etc. The FBO is quick and easy, that is how they make their money. As a rule, when leaving the local area, ALWAYS carry some of Uncle Sam's plastic, and life is easier. Some bases, which I won't mention, get all confused when a transient aircraft shows up. Transients are no biggie in the civilian world.

I've seen an F-14 come into Portland, Me-KPWM. Couldnt figure out why since Brunswick NAS is only 15 miles north.

Atlantic City International is home to the New Jersey Air National Guard 177th Fighter Wing, F-16s.

I've seen C-130s and occasionally C-141s and C-17s at EWR, very rarely though.

JohnM.

Try getting service for a civlian aircraft on an Army Airfield....Jeez, I am ex-army, was assigned to aviation units, and I didn't have an appreciation of how dense they could be.

Try explaining to somebody the that a C-21 and a Lear 35 are the exact same aircraft!!!

ORD use to have C130's there, now Polar and Airborne express use the ramp....also we get some Military stuff every now and then and they also park over there as well. Last saturday i saw a C-17 climb out and head east from ORD. I have never seen any military stuff land at DFW though, probably because Carswell, NAS is really close.

PDX is home a F-15 ANG wing and a KC135R AFR wing. Most of the military planes that come in go to the FBO and park. Confused

When I was at Dallas, TX, Red Bird Airport for my A&P exams, there was an Army Cheyenne landing every day at noon, with the crew having lunch in the airport restaurant.
In Germany once they caught a whole unit of US Army helicopters ( Hueys and Cobras, it´s years ago) regularly landing on the parking lot of a McDonalds beside an Autobahn near Wiesbaden for lunch, until one German car driver complained to the German police, who in turn informed the commander of the local US Army Aviation wing.

Huntsville has military aircraft visit all the time. The runway isn't long enough at the Redstone Arsenal airport for the big stuff (lots of NASA T-38s there, though).

Mostly C-130s, KC-135s, E-3s, and the occasional F-16. They all use the local FBO...mmmm....might be a Signature Aviation FBO? Formerly Butler Aviation, I think.

CLL (Easterwood Airport, Bryan/College Station, TX) sees tons of military traffic. Mostly T-1s, T-6 Texan IIs, T-34s, T-45s, Blackhawks and Apaches. But we do get a lot of other stuff to from time to time. Probably about half the traffic is military at this civilian airport.
