According to the Air Force website, as of March 2004, there are 42 Starlifters remaining in service. Active AF
units have 9, National Guard units have 7 and AF
Reserve units have 26. The site didn't say where these a/c were based. Their numbers are dwindling fast. AMARC at Davis - Monthan is full of them.
I lived for a long time in Marietta, GA
, where the Starlifter was produced, and saw many, many of them at Dobbins ARB.
Was on a C-5 coming back to Dobbins several years ago from Dayton, and one of the early C-141s, the short A model, flew in formation with us for a while. It was there to gather info on the radar signature of the C-5, and flew on both sides of us, in front, behind, above and below. This particular a/c had a long probe on the nose, and was painted in the white/silver original AF
