SR-71 Serials/Tail Nos.

Thu Apr 01, 2004 7:39 am

I've recently uploaded some SR-71 pics and I think the info might be wrong. I've put the serial as 64-17979. I got this from various sources including World Air Power Journal.
A recent source says the serial should be 61-7979. Anybody any idea what might be right for the production SR-71 aircraft?

There now follows a shameless photo plug

See Paul Kucher's excellent web site on the Blackbirds.

http://www.sr-71.org

He lists the A-12's as having 1960 serial numbers and the SR-71's as having 1961 serial numbers, no 1964's.

Thanks for that
Looks like for some reason the 1964 serials have be in listed in many places erroneously.

G'day Guys
Its a pretty well known fact that during its life the USAF continuously changed and altered serials to keep the total number of aircraft a secret.
Makes keeping track of individual aircraft pretty difficult but given the times i don't blame them.
You are going to find lots of inconsistencies with BBird tail numbers i am afraid.
Have fun
