Has A VC-25 Been Air Refueled While AF1?

Wed Apr 07, 2004 11:42 pm

Hello,
I know they have practiced air-refueling the VC-25s as part of normal training for the crews. Have they ever used air-to-air refueling while the President was on-board? (his recent trip to Baghdad? 9/11?) I know the 747 has the range to basically go where ever they need to normally so it would not be a normal procedure.

Enjoy!

Can't help you with that one but I do know that the pilots don't like to refuel in the VC-25 because of the chance of messing up the paint job. They probably do practice in E-4Bs though just in case.

The skill level of the pilots and the request of a senior boom operator probably eliminate the paint job issues. The slipway is an added bonus, in the F-4 and F-111 days the receptacle just popped up and that's all you had to shoot for.
