F-14s Over Manhattan Right Now (17:58 GMT)

Fri Apr 09, 2004 1:58 am

A formation of 4 fighters--they appeared to be F-14s--just flew rather low outside my office window. They were heading south past Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty, then out over the harbor.

Actually, they just flew over again as I am writing this!

Anyone know what the occasion is? I know there are often patrols these days, but not nearly that low, and not in groups of 4...

Is there an aircraft carrier paying a visit to the city? It's not fleet-week, is it?

Nope, they were definitely Tomcats...specifically, according to the Yankees' website, "four U.S. Navy F-14s piloted by the VF-211 squadron ("The Fighting Checkmates")"

I'm glad to know my fighter-recognition skills haven't completely atrophied.  Smile

Anyway, what do you mean "prevail again"?!! They didn't prevail last year, or the year before that, or...you get the idea.

Two Landed on 22 at LGA and the other two returned to base. I would imagine based on similar events in the past the crew of the two at LGA were taken to the game and will I presume fly out mid day Friday. Again this is speculation, nothing for sure.

Maybe practicing for a photoshoot of the two Queens - QE2 and QM2 in NYC together in a couple of weeks time, on 25 April. They sail within an hour of each other on their transatlantic journeys to Southampton.

Some years back, there was a great pic of BA Concorde flying over lower Manhattan with QE2 below - it could have been a Photoshop job.

The ultimate pic was the QE2 sailing up the English Channel, escorted by the Red Arrows fighter exhibition team, and above them the BA Concorde in the centre - all photographed from an aircraft above the lot, by Adrian Meredith! Adrian also shot the pic of four Concordes flying in formation.

Going OT a bit now, but I guess one of you new yorkers may be able to help me.

Is Concorde open to the public at the USS Intrepid yet? I ask as it would be nice to go see it when I am in New York next week (14-18apr). (I know I can see Concorde here at MAN - but it will be also nice to see it in NYC).

Why the hell does a crappy baseball game require a flyover by a bunch of F-15s? Quite stupid if you ask me. It freaks people out, especially in Manhattan, and its a big waste of money. Professional sports are for the bored and unsophisticated amongst us.

Maybe because baseball is America's pastime! To quote Sgt. Hulka in Stripes..."Lighten up Francis!"

I saw some F/A 18's do a flyover of Joe Robbie Stadium before a Monday Night Football game. FULL Afterburners!!! WOW, Makes me proud to be an American!

ANA777LOSER,

I dont know any New Yorkers, especially me being one, that has/had a problem with it.

For the nice patriotic ceremony they had, they felt the F-14s (not 15s, as you said *cough*) would be a nice touch. So what? Use your anger towards something constructive.

I happened to be at the airport and got some pics of both F-14s. If my FTP program was working, I'd show you more shots, but it's not.

I already have an F-14 shot in the queue, so it might be up soon if they accept it.

If anyone can hsot pics for me and has AIM, IM me on it at BigPhilNYC, and I'll send over a few shots.

I thought I had a print here, but can't find it. All copyright Adrian Meredith, whom I've known for a very long time - he also used to hold all the historic pix of BA and predecessors - and probably still does . . . best I can do . . .

Fly-by's are one of the highlights of pro-sports. I think when the Eagles had their home opener at Lincoln Financial, they had a B-2... I was out of town at the time  Crying

To answer why they have fly-by's at sporting events... I'd guess they are a recruiting technique. High-profile events with tens of thousands watching, plus potentially millions of people watching on TV... you can't buy that kind of publicity.

F-14 Tomcats of course, the coolest, meanest fighter ever. I assume that they were F-15 this morning without looking at them in person assuming that
A) there's no carrier group nearby, B)Normally it is F-15 on combat patrol over New York.
To all you Florida Marlin Fans, It is highly unlikely that they will repeat this year now they have dismantled the team.

Either that F-14 is huge or the pilots are scrawny (or both)!

As filthy as that jet looks, I would think it would be easily confused with an Air France airbus.

It's mostly that it's huge. F-14s are rather large fighters at 61'9" long (18.6 meters), 16' high (4.8 meters), and having a 64' unswept wingspan (18 meters)

As for it's condition, part of it is the USN's lo-viz camouflage is that sort of haze grey color, but making it worse is the fact that unlike USAF aircraft, USN aircraft tend to get a lot of corrosion damage from their proximity to salty air. Personally I think it'd help if the USN switch back to high-viz markings for all units that are not on deployment, but that's just my opinion.

ANA777Master, You don't know how big the -14s are if you are working around them for 12 hours a day.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy I just did that the last 3 weeks supporting VF-31.

And FYI, it's not that far to fly from Virginia Beach to New York City in the 'cats. So no nearby carriers.

By the looks of it the crew must have been planning to overnight somewhere. That blue bag behind the RIO is used by the crew to carry gear (i.e clothes, etc). Interesting color, the pilots in my squadron used green kit bags. One place I know they are not going to is the carrier. The kit bags were not authorized for ship board use.

ANA777Master:

Yes the F-14 is a big aircraft. As for it's "dirty" appearance that's what happens to carrier based aircraft over a period of time. Especially the F-14.
