E-2C Hawkeye

Sat May 15, 2004 1:02 am

OK...break it to me gently....how long can we expect the US Navy to keep the venerable Grumman E-2 Hawkeye to provide AEW/ AWACS for their operations? Any ideas or theories on a replacement?

Northrop Grumman is still building the air frames (I believe they are out of the bomber and fighter business after getting screwed royally by congress on the B-2 program) for the E-2, I don't see any reason that they would do anything else other than buy the new airframes.
At worst, you screw up and die.

Thanks! I didn't know if they were still building them or trying to develop a newer version / replacement aircraft.

Well, if they do decide to replace it, they will probably just strap a 30' radome on top of an F-18... seeing as how that's the Navy's answer to every carrier airborne need nowadays.

But seriously, I love the E-2 and hope to keep seeing them for many many years. On a side note, when I fly to St.Augustine SJG for dinner, I occassionally get to taxi behind one or its cousin, the C-2. Grumman has a refurb plant or factory of some kind there.

For awhile, the new Hawkeye 2000 program is not even halfway finished.
And new airframe improvements are coming also (props, flight deck), along with those system improvements.

FYI- The E-3 RSIP program is almost done, with 40/45 coming around 2010. The E-3 will be around until 2025, with the E-2 till at least 2020-25.

No, the E-2C's for Mexico are not of the Hawkeys 2000 model.
