Favourite 3 Aircraft Of Wwii

Mon May 31, 2004 9:47 am

Hello All,

Mine, in no particular order, are the Spitfire, Lancaster and Mosquito.

On a side note, I also love the B-17 Flying Fortress - an amazingly rugged and reliable aircraft!

Apart from these, all others come second, though the Stirling bombers also look pretty hefty (if under-powered)!

What about your choices, whatever the reason.

cheers,

Depends what you are looking for, favortie looks or you top combat picks.

For looks

Spitfire (Earlier versions)
Mosquito
Corsair.

Honorable mentions
P-51
Dauntless
Helldiver
Me-262
Fiat C.42 (The Italians took biplanes to new levels)
P-40

For some reason, the British, while designing overengineered aircraft did have some with beautiful lines.

If I was equipping the defense forces of Alaska in the war.

F4U-4 version of the Corsair.
Douglas A-26 Invader (not to be confused with the Havoc)
Curtis C-46

Honorable mentions

FW-190
Ju-88
Lancaster
B-25
Superfort
Mosquito
P-51
P-47
Hellcat
Spitfire (Later versions)
And that big British tankbuster, with the big Napier engine. I can't remember the name, One of them if memory serves is the one that is credited with strafing Rommel in France.

1 Spitfire (for its superb agility)
2 Corsair (for its beauty)
3 Zero (again for its beauty)

There are many "favourites" I have, but I just narrowed it down to these 3.

Hello Again,

L-188,
I think the aircraft you are referring to as the one that strafed Rommel's car is the Hawker Typhoon (or maybe the Tempest). I always get confused between these two aircraft, but I think the Typhoon was conceived earlier as a fighter, but found its forte as a Tank Buster, etc due to its excellent low-level performance and rugged build for sustaining damage. Correct me if I'm wrong, its been a long time since I've read a book on stuff like this!

Thanks.

Typhon on the mind.

I think the main difference between the two was engine choice, with the Tempest having the higher performance on the top end.

Not really something needed for tank busting.

I have many favorite warbirds of WWII. So here's my personal top three I'd strapped myself into as a pilot if I could go back in time.

1. Vought F4U Corsair
2. Douglas C-47 Dakota
3. North American B-25 Mitchell

I chose one each from fighters, transports & bombers. Regards.

Spacepope, hope you don't mind, but I looked up that B-26 on Joe Braugher's database & found out that 41-17747 was hit by AA fire & belly-landed in 1943. That photo you've posted looks like that particular last flight, to say the least! Do you know anything about it? Just curious. Regards.

I thought the Typhoon and Tempest came out after the desert campaign and made their appearance in NW Europe.
The tank buster I am thinking of is a Hurricane with twin 40mm (I think).

The tempest was based off of the typhoon. There were 2 versions of tempest, which fixed the typhoon's nasty habit of having its tail snap off in flight. One had a 24 cylinder Napier Sabre inline engine as shown, another had a Bristol Centaurus (radial) engine. This latter version was also the base for the Sea Fury as well.

If you look at the above photo, you can tell it is not a Typhoon because 1) it has a much larger vertical tail, 2) no cannon fairings in front of the wing, 3) no rocket rails, 4) different airscoop, and 5) no side doors on the cockpit (likr on the P-39, this was later changed on late model typhoons)

Here is a comparison of the Tempest and Typhoon

Does "all of them" count? I thought not.

Being limited to only 3 though,

1) B-17
2) P-38
3) Spitfire
4-767) all the rest.

This is a tough post:
1) F4U Corsair
2) Spitfire
3) PBY Catalina

Honorable mention to:
German 4 engine Condor
US Kingfisher
P-51
ME-262

Since it only has to be my favorite, and not the most notable, I had to include the Condor and Kingfisher. The Catalina because I thought it was the most elegant plane of the time, and sighted the Japanese fleet off Midway. The Corsair because it was the most dominant plane of the Pacific and the Spitfire because it won the Battle of Britain.

Hello All,

Canoecarrier - If im not mistaken, the Battle of Britain was largely dominated by Hawker Hurricanes, as there weren't too many active Spitfire Squadrons at the time. Although pretty much out-classed by the FW-109, the Hurricane bore the brunt of the fighting and bombing raids and more credit must be awarded to these aircraft over the spitfire, even if the latter out-performed the former!

However, I still love the Spitfire more! Just something about those elegant wings and eight .303 browning machine guns...

Hi Biggles. I'm a 'Spit fan as well. One thing though, I believe you meant Me-109 ( or Bf-109 ). The Fw-190 was not in service at the time of the BOB....thankfully, as it would've clearly dominated the Spitfire Mk-1 ( let alone the Hurri ) in service at the time. ( and even the next Mk-5...though the Mk-9 would later turn the tables )

The Messerschmitt Bf-109E was a fairly good match for the Spit Mk-1, often relying on the individual pilot skill to detirmine a win. The Hurricane did fairly well though, as mentioned, mostly going for the bombers with it's closely spaced .303's, but was no slouch as a fighter...as any '109 pilot stupid enough to try to turn inside a Hurricane would not be sleeping in his own bunk that night. Was a very rugged A/C as well.

Take care

Here is the RAF Fighter Command order of battle in August 1940, 11 and 12 groups were in the thick of it, sqns with some 500 and all 600 series numbers were pre war reserve units, 303 Sqn at Northolt was mostly Polish, there were other free Pole and Czech squadrons as well;

To give a further idea of relative Spitfire and Hurricane numbers, Fighter Command's aircraft readiness stats between July-November 1940;

Hello,

NKP S2 - Thanks mate, I did mean BF 109s! Weren't the FW 190s used more heavily by the Germans in the defence of the Reich from US daylight bombing raids later in the war, especially from 1943 onwards, some even being fitted with rockets and heavy (detachable) cannon? Not exactly sure on the dates, but love studdying that period of history none-the-less!

Gotta love those Spits!  Smile

GDB
The table is confusing for me. It seems that at the beginning Hurricane and Spitfire numbers were close and as time increased more Hurricanes were around. Did I read it right?
For the BOB, I am of the understanding that Hurricanes were of substantive numbers and won the day, although the Spitfire was superior when used.

We should also ask this question: what about planes that could have been great if they had just got them in service earlier?

I can mention three planes:

1. Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9. If Focke-Wulf had managed to get the Fw 190D into widescale service in the late fall of 1943 (which was possible given that the engine used on this plane was the Junkers Jumo 213, already in production for the Ju 188 bomber/recon plane), Luftwaffe pilots would have been on even terms against the P-51B and later series Mustangs.

2. Kawasaki Ki. 100. If Kawasaki had recognized the problem with the unreliability of the Ha.40/Ha.140 inline engines in the summer of 1944 and replaced them with the Mitsubishi Ha.112 radial engine in the late fall of 1944 the Japanese Army Air Force would have gotten a potent fighter for really cheap, something that would have matched well against even the P-51 Mustang!

3. Kawasaki Ki.96. If the Japanese Army Air Force had accepted the Ki.96 into service in the fall of 1944 as a true replacement for the Ki.45 Toryu (the Ki.96 prototype had an impressive top speed of 379 mph, pretty good for twin-engined fighter), they could have caused a lot of trouble for B-29 bomber crews.

BA97, the Hurricane was much easier to produce as well as having been in service longer, more production dispersal too, Hawkers were a bigger company than Supermarine with more mass production experience.

Saying it was easier to build is a relative term with regards to British aircraft  Laugh out loud

Most people don't really that the WWI Fokker Triplane was based on a captured Sopwith Triplane.

Fokker redesigned it to use a simple steel tube frame, rather then the intense woodwork the British aircraft used in it's construction.

2. Spitfire
3. BF-109

I recall awhile back seeing a picture of an airplane that resembled a P-51, but it was a dive bomber. It had dive brakes that would come out of the top of the wing. I don't think it ever really made it big in production but I was curious if one of you guys could give me the name of the aircraft. Thanks for any help  Smile

The first version of the P-51 to enter service with the USAAF was the A-36 Apache, which was basicly an Allison powered P-51A set up for divebombing.

B-17 - Just cant picture WWII with out its image popping up in my mind.
C-47 - The DC-3/C-47 is just plain one of the most monumental aircraft ever.
Spitfire - My Great grandfathers brother (Mannix) flew one for the RAF, and was a successful dogfighter until he was shot down over the deserts of Egypt.

I am surprised no one has mentioned any of the truly beautiful Italian third generation designs: Fiat G55; Macchi 202/205. The Fiat CR42 is a very attractive design as well.

Having said that the Spitfire and Hurricane must always be up there.
