Aircraft Seeing Combat In Wwii & Korea

Mon Jul 12, 2004 11:27 am

Hello again Folks...
Just wondering which aircraft were retained by the world's armed forces that saw service in WWII, then were used again in the Korean War. Just speaking on behalf of the USA, I can think of these aircrafts at the moment. Please feel free to add your comments & any information you have. Again, just the types that saw action in both conflicts. Regards.  Wink/being sarcastic

The Douglas A-26/B-26 Invader saw service in both WW II and Korea. It even went on to fly in Southeas Asia with the On Mark company modifications.

I'm all at sea with my additions to the list, which are:

Short Sunderland (RAF squadrons based in Japan)
Supermarine Seafire (carrier based FAA squadrons)
Martin Mariner (US Navy squadrons based in Japan)
Consolidated Privateer (US Navy squadrons in Japan and on Okinawa)

Did the Grumman F8F Bearcat actually saw service in WWII? I knew squadrons were being formed & some were actually deployed on carriers on the way to Japan, but I believe the war was over before the Bearcats could do anything. But I've been wrong before. BTW, speaking of the Bearcats, did they see significant service in Korea? Because alot of orders (not just F8Fs) were cancelled in mid-1945. Regards.

I don't believe the Bearcat ever made it over to the war zone.

But they did see service in Korea, and early Vietnam.

How about the C-46 Commando, these saw plenty of use in both wars. Also the C-54 Skymaster.

B-17's and PBY's were used in the search and rescue role.

If we "stretch" the meaning of operational,we can add the P-80/F-80 Shooting Star,as well.2 of the earliest pre-production models flew a few reconnaissance missions in Italy in April/May 1945.

The British used Fireflies and Meteor jets, however not versions of the 2nd WW.

Weren't the TBF/TBM Avenger used in one function or other in Korea?

B-25 Mitchells were used on liaison duties from Japan.

The RAAF used the obsolete P-51 and Gloster Meteor, both of which saw service in WW2. The South African Air Force, our Commonwealth brothers, also used the P-51 in this famous police action. As the RAAF soon discovered, the P-51 was not world's greatest ground attack platform- it was too vulnerable to ground fire. The USAF knew it would have been better served by the P-47, but for some reason never deployed them in theatre.

Did the F7F see service in WWII?

Strange thing about the Corsair was that it remained in production till 1954, a year after shooting stopped in Korea.

Another thing a Corsair was able to shoot down a Mig in Korea, not in WW2 since they were deployed to the Pacific.

Regarding the B-26 A-26 Invader...

My father flew that in the Bay of Pigs and in the Congo conflict, along with the T-28.

You guys are forgetting another important type to see action in Korea, the T-6 Texan in a forward air control role (LT-6G). The T-6 of course was a training type heavily used by the Allies in WW2 although a few early Texan variants (A-27s) did see action against the Japanese in a combat role while the Philippines were being overrun.

I think the British Firefly carrier based fighters also saw service in WW2 and Korea, although I am not certain of that.

Don't think the F-8F Bearcat saw any actual combat in WW II. Likewise the F-7F Tigercat, which did see action in Korea.
