AF 1 ATC

Sun Jul 18, 2004 10:24 pm

recently visited our local ATC centre. One controller told me that when he guided AF 1 in, there were two Secret Service agents standing behind him- making sure everything went 'ok'. Obviously, these guys really don't muck around............

Yeah visitors are not aloud in the tower when big blue comes into town. Usually there are a few agents in the tower, plus scattered all over the airport with some sweeeeeeeeet equipment (NICE guns with some pretty hefty lookin scopes). They do the same sometimes for little blue (AF2) but usualy no ss agents in the tower....just spread out all over the place. (this is pre-sept 11, i havent been in the tower with af1/2 since then)

The Secret Service got very upset when AF1 got delayed ( approx 7-8 trackmiles) due to a King Air on a ambulance flight. The SATCO told them to get a grip and let the staff do their job. (Because when AF1 was on ground, no other aircraft was permitted to move until AF1 was parked)
The Beech would have gotten approx 15 min delay, and that's just not on when it's a HOSP flight.

HOSP flight have absolute priority, no matter who is in the delayed aircraft.

(This happened in Sweden)

Yeah here in the US its known as a "Lifeguard" flight. Which same as in sweden, has top priority. I believe the only thing with higher priority is an aircraft that has declared an emergancy. Anywho im only a student at the moment, so if anyone could correct me on that from the 71.10 it would be appreciated. Thanks.

As far as I understand, an aircraft in distress have priority over ALL other aircraft. Then the pecking order deals mostly with maneuverability. Not sure where exactly AF 1 fits in, but I'd assume pretty high up with a couple dudes with uzzis standing behind the ATC.

The 1st 4 priorities are:

1. Aircraft in distress
2. Lifeguard/Airevac/Medevac flights
3. Search and rescue aircraft on a search and rescue mission
4. Presidential aircraft and entourage - includes VP and any others so designated by the White House

I've worked with the Secret Service when the POTUS and entourage flew into my airfield after 9/11. Minimum staffing in the tower, a USSS agent with his own phone (got plenty of calls to/from the White House), no USSS in the radar room, though. The office area below the tower was very secure and you had to be on list to even get in the door.

If you want to hear all that happens when the pres is in town check this out.. its a 50mb file. This is the feed I run, and someone took the time to piece an archive of the event together. Lots of military stuff high in the sky.

Check it out...

It's a SEVEN HOUR long file.....!! I've got better things to do then listen to that. Heck, AF1 was here in Nashville last week and we where getting ready to head out for engine runs when ATC put a ramp hold out so he could leave, so we just went to lunch early.

EMBQA,

It's a SEVEN HOUR long file

Depending on which internet connection you have!  Wink/being sarcastic

Only took me 9 minutes at approx. 90kb/sec.

Could have done it in less than 2 min if the server had a better bandwidth!  Sad

ps: That audio file is 420 MINUTES long!!!!  Wow!
