Paint Schemes US Military AC (New)

Fri Aug 13, 2004 11:30 pm

In other sources as well a A-NET I have noticed the US Navy USMC appears to be changing from the low viz schemes. I saw a shot on CBS news the other night of a carrier in the gulf, the F-14's were painted up in squadron colors and looked great. Which do you like ? I love this shot of the 18 thanks Mr. Fulber!

What's the point of low-vis?

It sure as hell doesn't hide the planes from radar! I know about the whole silhouette bit, with how a gray plane blends in with a gray sky, but colorful tails shouldn't hurt that!
Silly Islamic extremists, it's just a cartoon!

Just a clarification.. the USMC may be located under the Department of the Navy, but they're NOT part of the Navy! There is a very big distinction. You're sure to piss off any Marine if you label them as being part of the Navy... just an FYI.  Smile

Reflections. Low vis limits reflections from the sun during a dogfight and at other times.

Even if you're radar picks a target up say 10 miles out, it is much harder to spot a grey dot against the horizon than it is a bright red or orange dot. Grey also reflects less light making it harder to see.

Even with the increased use of colorful paint schemes, the finish is still a low-reflectance one. Not the high-gloss finishes of years past.
