Saab Viggen

Sun Sep 19, 2004 9:55 am

While reading the thread about the Draken that is already in the forum, I was wondering about that other remarkable Swedish plane, the Viggen. Who uses it, or has used it? Are any of them still flying? And were they developed in the same "era" or is one of them significantly older/newer than the other?
I scratch my head, therefore I am.

To what I know, the only user of Viggens is the Swedish Air Force. They are still using around 100 of them as interceptor (JA-37), trainer (Sk-37), ECM aircraft (Sk-37E) and attack aircraft (AJS-37).

The JA-35 Draken is about 10 years older than the Viggen.

Today, Viggen's are mainly used for disturbing enemy communication. JAS has succeeded the Viggen as Sweden's main fighter jet.

There are still JA37 flying in the SWAF at the F4 wing.
The reece variants are still in use as well, and is that last variant to be replaced by the Gripen.

The Viggen is a bit of a sad story really, because (as usual) the Swedish goverment commit to a contract for A LOT of fighters they don't need. (Look at Gripen, 204 firms orders, requirement today LESS THEN 100!!!!!)

Point is, when I worked at Ängelholm/ESDB in 2002 the scrapping of Viggens took place there (since moved to Halmstad/ESMT), and some of the Viggens going under the scrap mans axe had less then 800 hrs on the clock!
Nato F-16 of similar age have more then 3000 hrs on theirs!

Gripen is the last Swedish fighter, so this will not be repeated...

I do not suppose there is any change of any Viggens being sold on.

Apart from the ones still flying, are many stored. I understood that they are being retired one day and torched the next.

"Apart from the ones still flying, are many stored."

Nope, straight to the scarp......

As for sales, the only countries interested are problably ones the Swedish goverment are less keen to sell to.
Remember that the aircraft in SWAF service in VERY focused at swedish service, so a lot of conversion work would probably be required.

Beside the F4 there is one squadron of the F21 in Luleå/Kallax still active with several versions of the Viggen. This squadron is supposed to be the last to operate the Viggen (until 2005) while F4 will change to the Gripen very soon (maybe even started).
