Any Suggestions For Propellants?

Thu Oct 14, 2004 6:53 am

My club is building a rocket for a competition. We've been doing a bit of research, but it we haven't decided on fuel. We're also on planning to get an engine w/ 400lbs of thrust.

Hydrogen Peroxide
Liquid Oxygen
Nitrous Oxide
Hydrogen
Perrafin
etc...

Are there any suggestions? Pros and Cons. Need not worry about money, because the school is funding it. Take into consideration time (4 mos) and safety. Right now, it's propellant that we're talking about. Thanks!
Gravity explains the motions of the planets, but it cannot explain who set the planets in motion.

Not an expert, but I would say paraffin. The other propellents you list require some degree of care (hydrogen) and complex storage (like pressurized gas tanks), whereas paraffin is just a solid material.

You might want to check with the guys at Armadillo Aerospace... they have demonstrated very small-scale engines with the propellents you list, and some of the members launched rockets simmilar to the ones you describe before moving to suborbital stuff. Hell they might let you buy something off them....
