Sen. John Mcain Gives The AirForce The Boot.

Mon Nov 22, 2004 1:28 pm

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/200432_boeingmccain20.html

"In blistering remarks from the Senate floor, McCain, R-Ariz., said Air Force Secretary James Roche intentionally told Congress one thing about the tanker deal while offering conflicting views in private e-mails to other government officials."

"But McCain suggested that the misdeeds may go far deeper than that, and he reserved his harshest words for the Air Force."

"I don't buy it. I simply cannot believe that one person, acting alone, can rip off taxpayers out of possibly billions of dollars. This appears to be a case of either a systemic failure in procurement oversight, willful blindness or rank corruption. Either way, full accountability among Air Force leadership is in order," he said."

Apparantly Roche was in the Boeing sales team.

Let McCain take the place of Rummy, would ad some credibility to the Bush team..

In these days shortly after 9-11 everybody suggesting KC330 might be an option could publicly be labelled "un-American" and "ex-communicated"

Unfortunately, Kessje, John MCcain won't ask for the KC-330, so no luck there!
He's just pointing out this is not something isolated to 1 person, but the whole organisation needs a 'bit' of a shakeup.

...And we don't need McCain as secdef to get the shakeup... he's doing quite well from his present position....

KEESJE,

Yes and Europe is free from corruption. *cough*OilForFoodProgram*cough* Even before 9-11 there would have been little chance for Airbus to provide such an important USAF asset such as tankers. I don't think even Clinton would have taken it that far. But I do agree with McCain that we need to look at appropriations, we are spending millions of dollars on oversight, that apparently was useless because of one high ranking officer.

McCain (above link) :I simply cannot believe that one person, acting alone, can rip off taxpayers out of possibly billions of dollars. This appears to be a case of either a systemic failure in procurement oversight, wilful blindness, or rank corruption.

But anyway PPGM, I understand the competition will start all over.

Boeing & Airbus wil likely have improved their bids (meeting original specs, proven technology & political sensitivities) so the customer will probably get a better choice as a result of fair competition.

I can't read the washington post, I don't feel like giving a blood sample. Anyways many of us have said in the past the competition is not a competition in the sense that you are thinking, instead it will bring Air Bus in to give them the run around, just to pressure Boeing to lower it's price.

If you or Air Bus doesn't like it, the French have the exact same defense policy.

KEESJE:

If you think McCain is a friend of Airbus, you're sadly mistaken. You're probably one of these people that thinks he's a "moderate," as well.

I think that we are sort of missing the point of what the Post article in particular are saying. The Post article is all about how Boeing was using questionable ethical things to bid for the contracts. The DOD is not happy with Boeing right now. This is the second time this year Boeing has been rebuked by DOD.
As much as we might like to say that 'Of course Boeing will get the contrct.' It isn't that simple anymore. Boeing needs a good and ethical approach to EADS...just saying the US should pick Boeing isn't going to do it in this day and age. There are too many congressmen who are pressured by constituents to explain COST...particularly since 767's aren't manufactured nationwide.

Well, the best of both worlds would be to give a contract to LMT or NG for new tankers. LMT had a proposal, but retracted it when they saw the 767 was preferred...but now it may be back on the table again.
