Operation Red Flag

Tue Dec 28, 2004 4:25 pm

Has anybody been to the IMAX theater to see operation Red Flag?

I know it is all about fighter planes, but was awesome to say the least.

My Q is this, there is a military plane with a huge radar deal on top of it. What kind of plane was that? I don't have the slightest clue about military aircraft, but to keep it on the commercial aviation side of things, was it at one time a commercial plane? Like the KC-10 was.

Haven't seen what you're talking about, but I'd almost bet the aircraft in question is the E3 Sentry AWACS, Airborne Warning and Control System

A Royal Air Force 707 AWACS aircraft flew into Heathrow a few years back, and parked alongside BA's hangars at TBA. That evening, in the TBA Conference Room, we enjoyed a throughly interesting lecture by the Commanding Officer, especially arranged for the Royal Aeronautical Society.

They had just returned from Kosovo, where they had been operating for some time, having been originally told that it would be all over in weeks! The anecdotes flowed like the wind, and the audience comprising all airline types, were enthalled!

The cream on the cake was that we were all invited to go out on the apron to actually board the AWACS aircraft from the rear, under the radome, and made our way forwards for our guided tours. Being an ex BOAC 707 crew member, it was quite an experience to see all the complex equipment in place of seats!

Their flight crew were then dined by our organisers, before leaving for RAF Waddington the following day! The CO mentioned that as far as he knew, he was the only pilot to land and take off at LHR without a Commercial Pilot's Licence! Awesome, in the true sense of the word!
