C-130 Grounded?

Sat Feb 12, 2005 1:50 pm

I saw on CNN tonight that a headline read, "Military Grounds C-130" on Headline News. But the story they were actually reporting wasn't about the C-130. So they obviously put that up wrong. But did this happen? I can't find anything on google about it.

Here's a link regarding the grounding of 30 C-130E models.

Given that the RAF C130K that crashed in Iraq suffered a catastophic failure of the right wing, I wonder if there is a link here.

Apparently the "K" hercs in the RAF have the the mod to the wingbox allready. Not affected with this.
(Many onther C130 operators have had this problem, both Norway and Sweden had to ground pending modification some years back)

Hey everyone....I work on the staff of Headquarters, Air Combat Command at Langley AFB, VA. The EC-130H weapons system team folks work right down the hall from me. They did indeed ground C-130E plus put flight restrictions on other E and H models. Here's a link to air force news story about it

By the way, I work U-2, RQ-4 Global Hawk and RQ/MQ-1 and MQ-9 Predator logistics sustainment.

USAFMXOfficer -

Are the groundings just temporary?

Hopefully the groundings are temporary but for now it sounds like just over 90 C-130's have been grounded. C-17's will be picking up the slack for those 130's that were flying into Iraq & Afghanistan.
There are 3 types of people. Those who can count, and those who can't.

IMO the RAF needs to minimise C130K useage particularly in Iraq/Afghan and take a damn good look at the wing and wing root of the C130K as a matter of urgency.

I don't know how much commonality the E has to the A's but wingbox failure has proven to be a catastrophic problem on C-130As

USAFMXOfficer:

I tried sending you a message, but I guess you have to be a first class member to do so. In any case, I was wondering how the field was like. I've heard from some enlisted dudes in MX that as an LT, MX officer is a real chill job as you pretty much let them work, interact with them, sign off their stuff, and you're not behind a desk day in and day out.
I'm thinking about doing that if I don't fly, and then going Acquisitions or PA 2 years after (or ASAP) (since you cannot go directly into those fields as a first assignment).
Anyway, any reply is appreciated. Thanks!

Well, I had no intentions of "stealing" anything...here is another link about the C-130a fire tanker wing separation...

Don't worry, that site steals pics from Airliners.net. You'd be "returning the favor".  Big grin The photo of the C-130 in the second link is horrifying, to say the least. Good thing they're being grounded to be able to find out what went wrong and save who knows how many lives.

So are the C-130J's constructed differently?
