Hercules Landing On Snow

Fri Mar 18, 2005 8:31 am

I just saw on German TV Kabel 1 a program about Hercules LC-130 landing on a snow-ice runway in Greenland and at the South Pole. They had skies under the wheels. I saw this before but only with smaller planes. It was absolutely fascinating to see these big birds landing on ice with huge skids. These Hercules are amazing planes. For short take-of they even have auxiliar rocket propulsion. (like they called it on TV). Wow!

Yup, those LC's are custom built, they have a lot of modifications to their structure to accomodate the skis.

Actually in addition to the LC-130H's there was also the C-130D model which had skis too. They where mainly operated by the air force in Alaska before they lost the Greenland support mission to the NYANG.

Some of them had the gear removed and became C130D-6 versions.

Also the Alaska Air National Guard also operated the C-123J on Skis. I don't remember if the gate guard 123 is a Ski bird or not.

ZRH,
The Hercs are great machines! Can come to a complete stop on a landing roll in less than 500 feet, they can back up, and takeoff again with less than 2000 feet of runway. If you do some research work here on a.net of the Blue Angels' Fat Albert they have some great JATO takeoff pictures. You truly cannot get a grasp of the -130's capabilities until you see Fat Albert put through its paces in a display.

Hercs are great.....as long as they get those center wing box cracks taken care of.

USAFMX: Is there still a sizeable amount of Herc Echo's grounded? Shame that Congress doesn't see the viability of the J model and how it really can supplant the older models in service today.

It's the other way around really. USAF didn't want the Js, Congress kept putting them back in the budget for Guard and Reserve units in their districts.
Now USAF is starting to give the J a second look.

If you're referring to the one a K(l)ulis ANGB at ANC, it is on wheels . . . it's still parked near the near club as far as I know . . . I don't get out the Kulis any longer . . . but my brother will know - if it interests you I'll ask him. He's asky cop out there.
