KNTU...NAS Oceana

Wed Mar 30, 2005 4:26 am

We were just wondering where the designation KNTU, for NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach, came from. Is it an abbreviation for something, or are the designation letters picked randomly?

Thanks.

Few on the Navy ICAO of IATA codes of their Naval Air Stations have any meaning toward the the name. That all do have an N in them.

I do not know how they got NTU...the "N" has been discussed before...Norfolk Naval Air Station is NGO, so don't ask me why... My flightline sticker says "NTU" on it and a picture of an F-14 'cat means that is where I am based.

You would think it would be something like 'KOCN' or 'KEAN' but that would make too much sense.

Lets not forget NAS (Alvin Callender Field) (NBG / KNBG), USA - Louisiana">NBG = NAS JRB New Orleans

Most naval base's 3 letter identifier begin with N, dunno why, but they do. there are of course a few exceptions, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.
Pilots are idots, who at any given moment will attempt to kill themselves or others.
