Won An AT-6C Warbird Flight

Well okay I didn't win it, but I bid on it in a silent auction and my bid was the winning bid.

So now I get to take a sightseeing trip in an AT-6C. Does anyone here have any operational experience on this trainer or any insights? I understand this plane was in use by the US Army Air Force (in the days before the Air Force was it's own branch) from 1942-1948 as a trainer. It looks to have some big radial recip up front. Maybe an R-4360?

I am a large person, 6'7" and about 260 lbs, am I going to fit in the cockpit?
Firings, if well done, are good for employee morale.

I took a 45 minute flight on one of those a few years back in Kissimmee, FL. Great experience, some aerobatics, and you could also fly the plane yourself. There was another similar plane flying at the same time, so we did some formation flying, low flybys etc. I sat in the front, but I have heard that some other operators have the guest in the rear seat.

600 hp Pratt (?), loud and powerfull. You could purchase a VCR and/or still photo film of the flight. I only took the photos, I should have taken the VCR, too.

Have fun!!! (But don't eat any heavy meal before it...)

The T-6 wishes it had a R-4360 up front! You could go pylon racing with that combo if you could figure out how to balance the aircraft. Actually it had a Pratt & Whitney R-1340.

I've gotten a couple hours in a Harvard. It's basically a T-6 with a 450hp engine out front. It's a neat experience. The Harvard is a little anemic becuase of the smaller engine but it was still a blast.

If you're going to do aerobatics and have never done this before I would eat a light breakfast and then not eat until after your flight. I promise that you'll toss your lunch the first time you do aerobatics. Big grin

Brons2; as a big of a man that you are, you will be doing a sardine job front or rear seat. I am assuming that you will be front seat and qual PIC in rear so you can experience first-hand, but might suggest that if you have chance for some rear seat time and the airplane still has the swivel seatpan so you can rotate 180 deg in flight, you do partake. Rear canopy pushed fwd, relaxing, looking out past the feathers is might-near as cool as being upfront (and, of course, you don't have the workload). Anyway, have wonderful time, and remember the six is stressed and certed for just about any aerobatic loads you guys will be envolved in, and it will be FUN!

The only major difficulty with a six (as I percieve, anyway) envolves rotation parameters (the old boys, and I, have saying that one should train in a C47 or even a B17, THEN learn how to train in a T6). In flight the T6 is cake.

SATL382G...R4360s always sound "wrong". The R1340 sounds perfect and you don't really "need" more than 900-950HP in a T6 unless you're doing special stuff. Kind regrads...Jack
