Clark AB F-4E's In Desert Storm

Sat Apr 23, 2005 11:38 am

I recall reading somewhere that a detachment of six F-4E Phantom II's from Clark Airbase, Republic of The Phillipines (tailcode "PN"), were deployed to Incirlik Airbase, Turkey during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. The authors of the book were unable to determine if the aircraft took part in combat operations, although they noted that these F-4E's had PGM capabilities. Does anyone know if these F-4E's took part in combat operations over Iraq during the Persian Gulf War No. 1?

Around the time of Desert Shield/Storm, the only active USAF units flying the F-4 were the 35th TFW at George AFB, the 52nd TFW in Germany, and the 3rd TFW at Clark AB in the Philippines. It was the George unit that got all the Phantom glory during that time, but it wasn't the only batch of guys flying the types as the 3rd had dets in Turkey during that time.

Also, more info below from http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/agency/usaf/90fs.htm

As Desert Storm arose, the 90th Fighter Squadron (based at Clark AB after Vietnam) sent six F-4's to Incirlik Air Base, Turkey. The squadron's involvement in Desert Storm gave the 90th the distinction of being the oldest squadron in Pacific Air Force to participate in all five wars. The squadron joined 11th Air Force in 1991 and moved to Elmendorf AFB, AK. The squadron replaced its F-4's for McDonnell-Douglas F-15E Strike Eagles.

IIRC, the only USAF F-4s to fly combat missions during ODS were F-4G Wild Weasels.
