Absolutely.

They were off the Carl Vinson . . .

Haven't heard anything yet . . .

From BBC News

Quote:
At least one US Marine Corps pilot has died and another is missing after two F/A-18 Hornet jets crashed in Iraq.

Yes, one crew is dead  Sad the other missing. It appears they collided in flight due to bad weather.
Even though this appears to be human error, I recall the F/A-18 doesn't have an outstanding safety record... Am I wrong?

I don't know that this is an entirely fair statment. IIRC There have been a lot of training accidents over the past several years, apparently attributed to 'pilot error' but if this were car racing, would have been referred to as 'just racing' accidents. I'm sure one of them made a mistake of one form or another, but I doubt it was anything blatantly stupid.

Didn't want to put the blame on the aircraft, though I recall quite a lot of training accidents, many involving carrier ops. I guess if something could/should be improved in the operating procedures for this machine and/or in the crews training...

If they were from Carl Vinson, that would make them from the VMFA-323 Death Rattlers.

A note in the Non-Av thread said, the bodies had been found. What a shame. Sympathies to their families and fellow airmen.  tombstone

Which is true! Aircrew found one of the pilot's body. Most likely the planes collided as no hostile fire is indicated. Based in MCAS Miramar in San Diego. Godspeed.

Both pilots died, not just one as initial news reports indicated.
