Why No More Sukhois For IAF?

Fri May 20, 2005 9:35 am

Su31MKI is the latest fighter in IAF's portfolio, but was wondering why is it not considering it in its current expansion plans. They seem to have zeroed on Mirages, SAAB, F-16/18 and MIG-29.
Anybody with info on this?

My guess is they want to sell them. Are the maintenance and operating costs on the Su-31 very high? That could be the answer.

nah!! don't think so. They are "neighbour's envy owner's pride". I may be wrong, but SU-31MKI are higher end fighter, and IAF seems to be looking for something that can fill the gap created by delayed LCA. Just my guess.

Su31MKI

They are called Su-30MKI, not SU31MKI

The MRCA requirement has nothing to do with Su-30MKIs. The latter is a completely different class of fighter. There is absolutely no plan to get rid of the Su-30s for any reason.

BarfBag is right. The Su-30MKI and the new planes being sought are in different classes. The MKI is a heavy aircraft, and IAF is looking for some multi-role medium weight aircrafts. As per the IAF chief Air Chief Marshal S P Tyagi, these new 126 aircrafts are planned as a replacement for the ageing fleets of MiG-21s and MiG-23s which will be gradually phased out over the next two five-year plans.

The fine art of force balance

Aerospace Command a necessity: new Air Chief

The LCA will be the replacements for the Mig-21s which will be phased out later. Ultimately, the IAF fleet will have SU-30MKI/MRCA/LCA for multi-role capability, while the Jaguars will serve till 2020 as the primary strike aircraft.

the SU-30 MKIs sure seemed to give the USAF Eagle drivers some trouble in Cope India.

The MKIs were not used in Cope India, just the older Su-30MKs which are being phased out in favour of new MKI airframes. The IAF refused to field the MKIs since the US did not agree to bring Strike Eagles and AWACS.
