Dutch F-16s And KC-10 At Lajes

Mon Jul 04, 2005 2:06 am

Hey, just came back from the airport (TER / LPLA)where I joined my friend Joao Resendes in spotting. To our surprise 3 F-16s and a KC-10 (Joao got some great shots, look for them in the near future) arrived.

I just finished reading CNN where they report that 3 F-16s are going to Aruba to help search for that missing American teen. Here is the link:

http://edition.cnn.com/2005/LAW/07/02/aruba.searchjets.ap/index.html

I was wondering if the planes we saw today were the ones going to Aruba? In the article it states that they were arriving in Aruba Sunday, but it looks like they are overnighting here. Can anybody help?

cheers:

Was the tanker a USAF KC-10 or a Dutch KDC-10?

Seems likely they are the fighters going to Aruba.

The tanker was Dutch. Really pretty grey color scheme.

Could be lots of reasons for it. Right off the bat, the press might've gotten the date wrong. Then you could have maintenence issues on either the tanker or the fighters. Crew rest issues, diplomatic clearance problems, winds (big prob at Lajes), enroute weather, weather at alternates.........It goes on and on.

Long story short, I don't know, but there are many possibilities

I heard that the other day, too that the Dutch were going to send some F-16's so as to utilize some sort of infared aerial search. Unfortunately as long as their is no body, that goofy wanna be player will more than likely get off free as the wind, so this is a pretty amazing endeavor on behalf of the Dutch Government to offer the services of their military equipment like this.

J-060 313sqn NAF81 Lantirn 2 externals
J-145 313sqn NAF82 MARS 2 externals
J-511 313sqn NAF83 MARS 2 externals

these are the F-16's that went to Aruba

and the T-264 is the KDC-10 that went along with them.

Which has long since gone cold. Not sure I understand what good an F-16 with a recce pod will do in this case.

At another well known aviation site (whose name I will not mention to prevent deletion  Yeah sure) it was said that the F16s use the same equipment that found the mass graves in Bosnia. Don't know the principle behind it, but the F16s did found lots of death people in Bosnia. Of course finding a mass grave and a potential grave of one person is quite a difference.

Amen to that! We should have asked the USAF to do it for us. They have the same equipment, are much closer by (stationed in the Dutch Antilles, and the US ain't far either) and will definately want to help finding the girl.

I think it's a political move. We're trying to make the US media say something positive about us.

Probably so. But even then. There are RNLAF F16s based at Goose Bay, Canada and I believe also in some dessert in the US. It would probably have been easier to fly over the Lantirn/MARS pods by DC-10 and use a local F16 instead.

I think it's easier to brief F-16 crews over here then to interrupt a mission or excersise abroad just because they're a bit closer.

Same mission but a little off topic, I saw where FOXnews was reporting that US Navy SeALs on their own personal leave were volunteering their diving abilities in the search for the young girl from Ala-Bama. Even as a former US Marine it's hard not to have the utmost respect for the US Navy SeALs and I sure hope they get to make things even with those tally-whackers in Afghan for their recent losses over there on the War against terrorism. I'd sure hate to be on the SeAL's shitlist!  box

Just heard that the Dutch F-16's have stopped their search and will return home without any trace of the girl.

Or they could have "leased" some Venezuelan Air Force F-16s which are based 10min away (at F16s speeds) from AUA  Smile.
