Japan 767 Awacs

Mon Jul 25, 2005 8:19 am

I was driving down the service road on KBFI the other day and I noticed that there was an AWACS aircraft in the Boeing hanger on the north end of the field, Is this one of Japan's 767 AWACS? I am thinking this because it apeared to be larger than the 707 based airframes.

Well Japan has four of the E-767s with the same internal systems (for the most part) as US E-3Cs, to include the AN/APY-2. THe AWACS test office is in Seattle and JASDF uses virtually the same contract as the US/UK/Saudi for E-3 Test mods at Boeing. I'd guess that is why it was there-it happens time to time. YOu will see a lot more US E-3s with the new E-3G coming online in the next few years.

It could have been 73-1674 the Boeing test ship that is managed by AFMC
I would help you but it is not in the contract

When I spotted at BFI this ship was ALWAYS around somewhere...  Smile

Yeah I've got some friends on the test bird, and I've been on it once (good stuff), but the guy said 767 so I am still guessing it is part of the AWACS test/upgrade office at Boeing which does include the internal systems for the E-767.

What upgrades are planned for this model? And will NATO follow suit and similarly upgrade its E-3s to 'G' specs?

Cheers

Well unclass info on the E-3G is still somewhat in-the-dark i.e. not for me to make available on here  Smile but the G is getting another scope, cockpit improvements, newer and rearranged internal cabinets and some other stuff for the block 40 upgrade. Look for ops around 2010. Also it will just be "G" as all US E-3Bs and E-3Cs will be upgraded to the same standard from the current block 30/35. I think eventually NATO will follow suit, though first NATO is going to put in the extra rear bank of consoles that the US currently has.

The USAF E-3B/C has got to be getting up there in flying hours? What is the fleet average now?

When I left in 03 they ranged about 15000 to 20000 flt hours, the ones with the best radars have the most because most scheduling was based good and bad performers, if the the plane was known as a radar pig it usally wasn't picked to be flown. When MX stopped being dictated by op's which acft to fly we got a better handle on scheduling.
